Guatemala willing to intensify cooperation with CubaGUATEMALA CITY.— The new government in Guatemala today pledged itself to increase diplomatic, trade and cooperative links with Cuba under President Oscar Berger.
Eduardo Stein, the Guatemalan vice president, and Jorge Briz, the new foreign minister, expressed their willingness during a meeting in the Guatemalan capital with Fernando Remírez de Estenoz, the Cuban first deputy foreign minister, who attended the investiture that took place today.
In an exclusive for Prensa Latina, Remírez said that during the meeting with Stein and Briz, both had expressed the opinion that the contribution of the Cuban medical brigade was extremely important in improving public health throughout diverse regions of the nation and spoke in favor of strengthening this kind of cooperation in the future.
"They particularly acknowledged the work of Cuban doctors in supporting the Guatemalan population and spoke of extending this and other forms of cooperation," commented the diplomat, adding that his counterpart had praised Cuba for giving some 570 young Guatemalans the opportunity to study medicine on the island.
