App State on Lockdown After Reports of Masked Gunman
Source: WRAL News

BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University has put all campus buildings on lockdown and is urging students and staff to stay away from an area near campus after reports of a masked gunman.

In an emergency crime alert posted at 4:47 p.m. on the university's Web site, emergency officials said the man, described as a white male, 6 feet tall, wearing a black Pink Floyd T-shirt with a rainbow prism on it – was seen in the area of Appalachian South Apartments and the Hill Street area.

He was reportedly carrying a small black handgun and wearing a black or blue ski mask, red and green tennis shoes and was last seen with a small black, according the Web site.

1. This is so awful. My years at college were so tranquil.
It's hard to imagine what it must be like now.

I'm glad your kids are okay.

Damn. :(

7. Well, we've been ignoring or demonizing the mentally ill for 30 years or so.
It's coming home. That's all I can think.

And, since I come from an interesting family and tend to be interesting myself, I don't mean to stigmatize anyone. It's just that if no one is paying attention, sh!t is going to happen.

8. True enough. It's just so sad and hard to understand.
Shit, they've cut mental health services so much in this state it's actually amazing we
don't have more of these incidents, I guess. :(

9. We don't have more because people who'd actually do something like this are rare.
You probably know that better than I do.

But, "rare" is too many. :(

10. Man oh man. I worked there for many years, and a lot of my friends
are there. It is a beautiful little town, except for some of the dorms and student housing. Hope everyone stays cool and this situation turns out okay.

11. Damn, I have a good friend there, now. Many in the past.
Boone is a beautiful, quiet college town. Of course, that's the kind of place where things like this happens. I hope everyone is well.

Keep us updated.

12. My daughter says they have lifted the lock down.
I don't think they found the person, but I guess they've decided he's out of the area.
Nobody got hurt, no shots fired from what's on the news. Monday night classes are
cancelled.
Thanks for your good wishes. :hi:

24. yeah. That couldn't have ANYTHING to do with the socio-economic
group from that area, eh.

Lots of crime up there in the upper middle class golf and ski set---or maybe those people that shop at the overpriced crap shoppes in Blowing Rock.

Give me a break.

As far as the poverty outside that setting? They don't have enough to steal most of the time; and they have guns for hunting.

I don't think you can compare the crime rate there to say...oh....downtown Atlanta, D.C., or even Charlotte.

27. Check Avery or Mitchell gun crime rates
people do have guns and just choose not to shoot each other. Normal people, norman jobs, little to no gun crime.

It has ALL to do with socio-economic and cultural aspects. Suspect you would still see gun suicides and accidents but not drug related and gang related body stacking.

29. OK, so now we are talking about different counties?
I am very familiar with all three.

Tell me what other counties we are looking at in the US for our "comparison."

The OP is about Boone. It sounds like you are from NC; you know Boone and Blowing Rock aren't exactly "normal." If you want to compare them to say....Hilton Head, I guess we have something to discuss.

18. outline of Mental Health Reform in NC
In a nutshell, the governor took the millions of dollars which was to have been used for the creation of the scaffolding of mental health reform, paid some other bills, hired some cozy consultants for close to a million dollars when the thing was going down the tubes, then said that the former secretary had not been behind mental health reform, which was of course a lie, and then fled to a fallout shelter whilst avoiding the sad parade of perturbed, saddened, and hopping mad, citizens and providers.

31. You Just NAILED It. I worked for Blue Ridge Mental Health Years Ago
(in Mitchell County)
Public Mental Health has become a tragic joke in NC.

Services are virtually non-existent in the rural, western counties.

33. Update: this was a hoax
My parents live very close to Boone -- I asked my mom this morning whatever happened. She said it was a hoax -- the student wanted to get out of paying for a kicked in door (or some such). The police are charging him, and it appears App is expelling him.

I lived in VA last year when the massacre at Tech occurred, so this REALLY pisses me off. People I knew had loved ones killed at Tech, so lying about it is sickening.
