GOP students launch complaint Web site (Univ of Colorado)

Republican students at the University of Colorado launched a Web site to gather complaints about left-leaning faculty members, saying they want to document discrimination against conservative students and indoctrination to the liberal viewpoint.

"We want concrete examples of bias in our arsenal when we go to the administration, the regents and the Legislature," said Brad Jones, 20, chairman of the College Republicans, who launched the Web site last week.

The CU College Republicans are affiliated with Students for Academic Freedom, a national organization started by California conservative activist David Horowitz, who is pushing a Colorado effort to protect students from what the group sees as harassment or discrimination based on political beliefs.

Most faculty and many Democrats deny liberal indoctrination exists on campuses.

"I'm shocked the students would resort to this," said Barbara Bintliff, a CU law school professor and chairwoman of the Boulder Faculty Assembly. "I'm concerned they may wind up with a blacklist"

One of the ways that Gadafi (to pick one name out of the hat) used to get his spies into western countries was get them into the universities and colleges in that country, where they could do their stuff and keep an eye on any other Libyian students that might be studying at the college. This 'ruse' I suppose could be regarded as standard espionage activity carried out by lots of countries around the world.

So could it be that the right-wing have taken this thing a step further and are putting their spies into their own universities.

5. Actually, I have an interesting story

I wish I didn't have. I live in Boulder, and I find it a fantastic community. I volunteer at the local non-profit book collective, Left Hand Books. We have students from CU who pass through and students who volunteer. We also have a few profs who order textbooks through the store. So, I hear a few interesting tales about the university. I've heard some complaints of a recent shift to the right on campus; one girl came in to buy books and said that the prof stood up and said on the first day, "if you're politically on the right, you might be offended by this class and you might want to leave." Apparently, 20-30 people got up and left. My jaw dropped. I said to the girl, "Could you imagine any prof getting up and saying people on the left might be offended?"

"No prof would ever say that," said the girl drily. "That would be, like, a normal class."

It was rather funny, yet not.

Oh, and WTF with this sentence: "Most faculty and many Democrats deny liberal indoctrination exists on campuses." Wow, that's some awe-inspiring journalism right there.

in the 80's, I had more problems with right wing profs trying to indoctrinate with right wing ideology.

A liberal college is open, a carefree atmosphere, do as you please, loose, open minded, thinking, progress and discussion.

Conservatives in my opinion, believe college is more of a mom/child relationship, where, more liberal openminded students, look at college as an adult/adult relationship. So when a professor has a liberal idea, conservative students think they are trying to be changed by their new "mommy" and will think they are being offended or brain washed. An open minded person/liberal, will listen to what the professor has to say, decide for themselves wheter it is a right or wrong idea and may decide to challege the professor, like adults do.

Conservatives have Beliefs and liberals have ideas, you can change an idea but you can't change a belief.

I absolutely LOVE IT when I get a Conservative professor at my school (and I do), because it CHALLENGES ME to think and it fortifies my Liberal ideas…makes them stronger and allows me to be more positive and confident in my views.

What is the point of being force-fed what you want to hear? I purchase books to better learn the Liberal ideas, but in an academic setting I want all different viewpoints and THIS IS THE CHIEF problem with these Conservative cukoo birds. They are hostile toward NON-Conservative thinking-this is how they want it and this is how they win. Most Conservative hacks like Liddy and Limbaugh just pontificate and propagandize, defining an enemy (Liberals) who are not in position to defend (or define) themselves.

Right-wingers throughout have always gone after the universities because the universities give unto the world the right's most dangerous opponents: intelligent, compassionate people who support liberal ethics and social policies. It's hard to remain conservative when exposed to writers who eloquently describe the plight of the poor, when learning about the historical excesses of the concentration of wealth, or merely learning the rules of logical debate and realizing how many conservative arguments are based on poor evidence or outright slander of the opposition. So long as free and open inquiry is valued at universities, the professors and most of the students will be liberal. I don't think anyone should be browbeaten into any philosophy at a university, but if a university ends up with a conservative mindset, it likely will have surrendered its claim as a place of inquiry in the process. I cannot imagine economists worth their salt saying tax cuts are a good idea, scientists supporting creationism or sociologists claiming welfare makes the poor stupid and lazy. :P
