Outburst Interrupts Mo. State of State
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - For several minutes, state Rep. Rod Jetton sat stewing in his prestigious back-row seat of the House chamber as Gov. Bob Holden repeatedly criticized Republican lawmakers for cuts in aid to public schools.

Then, frustrated after Democrats applauded another of Holden's jabs, Jetton did something rather unusual.

Taking advantage of a brief pause in the Democratic governor's State of the State address to a joint session of the Legislature, Jetton yelled.

"Release the money, governor!" shouted Jetton, a Marble Hill resident who as Speaker Pro Tem is the second-ranking Republican in the House.

At Jetton's break from decorum, fellow Republicans stood and applauded.

16. And generally of excellent entertainment value!
Each side cat-calling and hooting the other side. The back-benchers sleeping. The speaker trying to maintain order. People shouting at Blair during Questions. (Can ya imgaine Bush going through such a treatment?) Good stuff!

2. double standard
If the governor comes before the General Assembly and uses his constitutionally authorized duty, mandate, to report on the State of the State as an opportunity to mislead the public, then I think it is perfectly appropriate for a cry to come out for the truth," Hanaway told reporters, prompting another cheer from Republicans flanking her.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Think they would have taken that position if Kennedy had yelled something out during * State of the Union speech?
I think the guy did us a favor. It wont be the last outburst.

3. The decorum of American politics leads to improper silence
Edited on Thu Jan-22-04 09:39 AM by HereSince1628
You'd think everyone was raised in Lake Wobegon and taught to submit in silence to injustice by the Sisters of Perpetual Sorrow

I for one would like to see people in the house and senate chambers listening and commenting on oral presentations. What's really wrong with 'Hear, hears', 'Nays, Nays', 'WHERE'S THE LINK?', and even a few 'boos?'

17. I agree completely!
Approval -- in the form of applause -- is not only tolerated but EXPECTED. But it's "bad form" to state disapproval.

The British House of Commons does it right.

6. They are getting worse now that their Boy King is going down
I have been
1. had my car keyed
2. tailgated and 3 men tried to run me off the road
3. yelled at "GO TO IRAQ YOU OUGHT TO BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF" at a bank drive thru
4. Had my car door kicked in
5. had a truck come straight at me in my lane 3 different times

all because I have anti war bumper stickers .
Whats worse, is, I have a picture on my car of my soldier stepson in Iraq wearing his military garb...
so, basically, these thugs are attacking the parents of a soldier.
Cowards and thugs..and it will get worse as *bUsh goes down in the polls....

10. Have you called a reporter a your local newspaper?
read your paper and find a reporter or columnist who shows he or she is not totally brainwashed. Call the paper and ask for them.

Tell them that you are the mother of a soldier, and tell them what people have done to your car.

It would make a GREAT article for the paper, believe me, because of the terrible irony of your treatment combined with your motherly worry over your son.

19. I would but this is a very small town
I stand on the streetcorner every Friday at Noon with others in front of the Post Office and we hold a vigil for the soldiers in Iraq complete with all their faces
I also have written many letters to the paper...I dont want my house burned down. I have to choose my battles well.
I will, however, report it to the police if I get the lisence number of any of these vehicles..as per their usual behaviour, they drive away fast or I dont see them when they kick the car..
Cowards.

14. I've had prob's with wackos too
I have a simple bumper sticker. It is an American flag with the word 'THINK' in the blue square. Someone kicked it and caved in an 18 inch circle - with the flag dead center - And this is a 'mommy van'.

9. Oh, this is only the tip of the iceberg here in Mo
When the 'Pugs took over the General Assembly in '02, they were primed and ready to do some destruction after forty years out in the wilderness. The legislative sessions have been brutal and ugly, and Catherine Hannaway and her actions simply cannot be described in polite words.

Holden, our Dem govenor, is towing the line though, and is trying to minimize the damage. Unfortunately the assembly is close enough to veto proof to make things dicey, such as when an Assemblyman, who is also an active National Guardsman, was illegally flown back to Mo in order to help override the CCW bill that was overridden with one vote.

Yup, these fine upstanding 'Pugs are willing to hold schoolchildren hostage in order to make sure that taxes aren't raised on corporations and the states richest one percent. After all, they must protect those WalMart heirs from those means ol' Dems.

Sad part about all of this is that while Holden is doing a stand up job to the best of his ability, he is being demonized on both sides of the fence and in the statewide "liberal" media. Sad to say, but it looks like we're going to be getting a 'Pug for a govenor in the fall. Then the shit will really hit the fan.

12. I agree with much of what you say
however I think McCaskil(sp)? is going to challenge Holden for the nomination and win. I like her she is definitely a fighter, and while Holden has done the best he could given what he's had to work with, Claire will keep the pukes from doing more damage to us.

15. Yep, you are correct
McCaskil is challenging Holden in the primaries, and while she is a fighter, I think she is also an oppurtunist, and in the end her actions will split the state party and consign the Dems to the back row for a number of years. Any Dem faces rough sledding in getting the govenors' mansion this year, and having a brutal and costly primary run is only going to make that run worse.

20. Any way to counter the Repugs this year's election?
When Ashcroft comes back to campaign for repugs there should be a group to challenge and ridicule Ashcroft. Thereby ridiculing any candidate that he supports.
