US Arrests Nearly 50 in Iraq, GI Dies
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=514&e=2&u=/ap/20040125/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq

<snip>TIKRIT, Iraq - U.S. soldiers arrested nearly 50 people and confiscated weapons in several raids in Iraq (news - web sites)'s volatile Sunni Triangle after a series of bombings that killed six U.S. soldiers.

A U.S. soldier died Sunday of wounds suffered in a grenade attack on his Bradley vehicle that was patrolling a central Iraqi town of Beiji the day before, said Maj. Josslyn Aberle, a spokeswoman for the 4th Infantry Division.

Five other U.S. soldiers were killed in separate bombings and a blast that narrowly missed an American convoy killed four Iraqis and wounded about 40 others in a bloody day of attacks on Saturday.

The deaths raised to 513 the number of U.S. service members who have died since the United States and its allies launched the Iraq war March 20. Most of the deaths have occurred since President Bush (news - web sites) declared an end to active combat May 1.

3. I agree. civil war not necessarily manifested in these news items

Unrest right now is just a precursor.

I'd agree though that the unrest is due to the failure of the occupation planners to acknowledge or prevent the upcoming conflict.

The occupation planners (PNAC) expected democracy like some giant miracle would make the Kurds and Sunnis feel safe with Shiite rule. PNAC also failed to anticipate a democracy could result in a dreaded theocracy of ayatollah rulers.

I also agree that much of the unrest is intended to accelerate the U.S. withdrawal so they can proceed with their civil war.

4. Civil war: We pull out and Iraq falls off the radar.
"I also agree that much of the unrest is intended to accelerate the U.S. withdrawal so they can proceed with their civil war."

And the criminals still make money selling their war toys to the various factions in Iraq. And we would still have their oil wells.

5. I like this part
In other developments Sunday:

_ The police chief of Tathrib town was arrested following allegations of corruption. Soldiers from the 1st Squadran, 10th Cavalry Regiment searched his house Saturday and confiscated five AK-47 rifles, two other rifles and ammunition. No details of the corruption allegations were, however, known, Aberle said.

8. Holy cow! A police chief with, can you believe it, weapons!?!
I mean, a policeman with a gun? Unheard of! Especially in scenic, tranquil Iraq. This is like saying they arrested an Iraqi oil well worker for planning to blow up an oil well, and their evidence was that he had plans to the workings of the oil well on him. It's what they're supposed to have!

6. Ever notice how
after a particular bloody week the propaganda tools of this administration trot out a story about how many Iraqis they've arrested? I've got an idea. Maybe we can arrest all Iraqi men and call it a victory? Halliburton can get the contract for building the jails for all of them.

7. Why don't we just enclose the Sunni Triangle in a giant wall
And call it the Sunni Triangle Correctional Facility?

Of course, that will only work until the Shiites in the south realize we have no intentions of giving them democracy. Stay tuned for that one. Then the shit hits the fan..
