By Tobin A. Coleman -- Staff Writer -- January 27, 2004HARTFORD -- It's now official. The Connecticut House of Representatives yesterday impaneled the state's first impeachment committee to investigate the actions of a sitting governor.
A grim and quiet House met in an afternoon special session and unanimously passed a resolution creating the bipartisan Select Committee on Inquiry to investigate ethics charges swirling around Republican Gov. John Rowland.
The committee will investigate gifts to Rowland from politically connected friends, subordinates and state contractors in the form of improvements to his summer cottage in Bantam that Rowland has admitted lying about.
The committee will decide whether to forward the action to the House, which will decide whether Rowland should be impeached.
