The American Civil Liberties Union filed a complaint Tuesday with the United Nations, alleging that many immigrants imprisoned and deported during the investigation into the Sept. 11 terror attacks were denied fundamental rights under international law.
In the complaint, filed on behalf of 13 people arrested under federal authority shortly after the attacks, the ACLU asked the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention to declare the treatment of the immigrants to be "arbitrary" and the U.S. policies to be a violation of international law.
"We are sending a strong message of solidarity to advocates in other countries who have decried the impact of U.S. policies on the human rights of their citizens," Anthony Romero, ACLU executive director, said in a prepared statement.
The complaint marks the first time the ACLU, among the largest civil liberties organizations in the United States, has filed a complaint with the U.N. working group.
