CLAYCOMO, Mo. - A United Auto Workers official said Ford Motor Co. has told the union of plans to lay off 200 workers at its plant in this Kansas City suburb.
Mike Perry, local union president, said he was informed that Ford plans to lay off 100 hourly workers on Feb. 6 and an additional 100 employees on Feb. 13. The Claycomo plant's approximately 5,600 hourly employees make Ford's Escape sport-utility vehicle and the F-series pickup.
Ford officials declined to comment Tuesday.
"I can't confirm that at this point," said Ed Lewis, a Ford spokesman at its Dearborn headquarters. "We haven't made any formal announcements."
In the St. Louis area, union officials said Friday they expected an announcement about layoffs at the Hazelwood assembly plant as early as Monday, but that announcement never came. Ford has said layoffs are part of a plan to keep the facility open but has offered no details to date.
