1. FOR FUCKS SAKE
don't watch.

Basically the BBC are being carpetted for misreporting on a claim that WMD could be deployed in 45 minutes.

The British and American governments killed possibly 10000 civilians and probably 30000 soldiers on the basis of this infomation. They get away scot free.

Democracy is toast.

4. You mean...
...for getting their report on the false 45 minutes claim right. An unforgiveable offence. Now wait for the calls for the BBC to sack its reporters, for its governors to give up their independence, and for the organisation to be carved up so that Murdoch can take the juiciest pieces. Hutton has just served the death warrant of independent, unbiased reporting in this country. He has betrayed the people and undermined democracy. No wonder Bliar and his cronies are crowing.

15. Most of us around here are usually much more verbose
However, there is only one word that sums up my reaction to this travesty of justice. This is so FUCKED up. We are screwed. They can not be stopped. Not unless 'we the people' rise up against them, but I'm afraid most people in the US are too well fed and lazy to even notice. I've been raging against the beast for a long time, this is one of the rare times that I am starting to believe there really is no hope for mankind.

The report itself is online (PDF) at
http://image.guardian.co.uk/sys-files/Politics/documents/2004/01/28/huttonreport.pdf

(337 pages, ~2Mb)

Am reading it now but it looks like a complete fucking whitewash so far.

17. Yes it's a whitewash...
Rod Liddle was on the BBC just now, reminding us that no law lord finds against the government in an enquiry. Appointing Hutton meant ensuring just this sort of report. So far he and Shirley Williams have been the only honest voices raised in dismay. Typical.

Though some corrupt old Labour ex Defence Secretary popped up like a gargoyle to start demanding Sambrooke (sp?) be sacked, on the grounds of his "relationship" with Susan Watts. He was shut up smartish, but looks as though the government has been attacking the BBC through scurrilous gossip too, just in case Hutton did come through for them strongly enough.

18. It's a complete whitewash
He said the "allegation was an allegation which was unfounded", because intelligence chiefs did believe that the source from which it came was reliable.

So he chooses to believe the people who we've since heard knew basically nothing about Iraq and WMDs.

He also said that Dr Kelly's meeting with Mr Gilligan was unauthorised, and in breach of the civil service code.

So it's his own fault he's dead?

He said: "I am satisfied that Dr Kelly took his own life by cutting his left wrist."
His death was hastened by taking a "concoction" of pills, said the judge. He added that no third party was involved.

It doesn't seem as if he's read the reports of the "suicide" scene, not enough blood, bruises on his body and head, the difficulty of slahing his ulnar artery when the radial artery is easier to find, heart monitor pads in place - WTF was that about?

Dr Kelly's meeting with Mr Gilligan was unauthorised and, by talking about intelligence matters, the scientist had breached the civil service code of procedure, the judge said.

Again, it's his fault he's dead.

Lord Hutton said he was satisfied that Dr Kelly had not suggested the government knew intelligence in the dossier was suspect or wrong.
He also said he did not believe the scientist had said the 45-minute claim was initially kept out because the intelligence agencies thought it was untrue.

He was present at the hotel when the meeting took place? How can he be so certain about anything?

It's a whitewash. Blair must be peeing his pants in joy over this.

Not to mention the fact that Kelly apparently had a hard time swallowing pills - which makes it rather impressive for him to swallow the around 40 sleeping pill I heard he swallowed.

I doubt we've seen the last of this case. I sure hope that Mr. Hutton isn't going anywhere in a small plane anytime soon :tinfoilhat:

26. There will be some serious criticism of Hutton's findings
Edited on Wed Jan-28-04 10:25 AM by Jack Rabbit
I'm reading the BBC account. While Lord Hutton may be correct to say that questions about whether the intelligence on Iraq justified an invasion or not are beyond the scope of his inquiry, I find the idea that the government's dossier was not full of exaggerations and lies (or, to use the colorful phrase that has taken on an almost technical meaning, "sexed up") just a bit absurd.

The Prime Minister stood before Parliament and said that Iraqi commanders could launch an attack with a biochemical arsenal within 45 minutes of Saddam giving the order. That statement was false. In fact, Saddam had no biochemical arsenal. Did the Prime Minister really believe anything that turned out to be so inaccurate? if so, how did he come to believe it?

I will reserve my judgment on the Hutton Report until I know more about it. Otherwise, my opinion of Mr. Blair has not changed. He is a liar.
