TAMPA - The federal government has proposed fining Clear Channel Communications $755,000 for material broadcast by the ``Bubba the Love Sponge'' show in Tampa that the FCC deems indecent.

WXTB, 97.9 FM, declined to comment on the proposed fine. It instead issued a statement from Clear Channel in which the company called on the FCC ``to convene an industrywide `Local Values Task Force' to develop indecency guidelines.''
``We believe the time has come for every sector of the media to join together and develop consistent standards that are in tune with local community values,'' Clear Channel's president Mark Mays said in the statement. ``Our audiences deserve nothing less.''

``The larger picture is that the FCC is under a lot of heat about indecency in radio and TV,'' said Tom Taylor, editor of industry newsletter Inside Radio. ``There has clearly been a hue and cry about it lately.''
