Parts of Florida, Mexico still suspects in tomato outbreak because they sold so many
Source: AP

WASHINGTON (AP) - Parts of Florida and Mexico were supplying «the vast majority» of tomatoes sold when the salmonella outbreak began in April and thus remain leading suspects, the Food and Drug Administration said Friday.

But the FDA hasn't narrowed its hunt to just those two places, said Dr. David Acheson, the agency's food safety chief.

---

Some of the sick ate tomatoes bought at supermarkets and fixed at home, while others ate them in restaurants. Among the clues FDA is pursuing: Nine people who became sick after eating at one restaurant chain, which might help pin down tomato suppliers. Acheson wouldn't name the restaurant or its location Friday because it's part of an open investigation.

Because they sold the most? That's the level of work we can expect when this Bush Admin crack team of FDA inspectors is on the job.

1. "Crack Team"
You said all that needed to be said.

I got sick too, though I knew better, but my tomatoes aren't ready yet.

3. When you hire third-world workers, you get third-world sanitary practices
But nothing matters except the Almighty Dollar to these unscrupulous employers.

6. Are 3rd world workers...
.... the ones inspecting the tomatoes? Are they the ones who decided when to pick them?

I don't think so....

Things like this happen all the time. It's just it used to get detected and nipped in the bud....so to speak. Not in Bush's America where food inspections are just an industry crippling pain in the ass. I wonder if it's as big a pain to inspect than to recall after sending many to the emergency room? Which do you think is more cost effective?

5. The Homeland can track the movements of every citizen.
It can read every email, listen in on every conversation. It knows what websites you've seen. It can read your license plate from 22,000 miles straight up. And it doesn't know where The Killer Tomatoes are coming from?

BULLSHIT.

7. I am very picky about my veggie purchases.
If I can't get it at the local farmers market, I do without. If there is nothing on the label about where it was grown, I don't buy it. Onions, corn, tomatoes, eggplant, beans & squash are planted in the back yard. I have a second corn planting soaking. Will plant broccoli, brussels sprouts & different lettuces when the weather cools down.

9. Explain to me again,
what is the cause of the Salmonella? On the radio, they said it was because tomatoes were rinsed in bleach". And we are supposed to avoid "red tomatoes, roma tomatoes,", but cherry tomatoes and tomatoes on the vine are OK.

This makes no sense.
