Missouri Gay Marriage Ban Moves Toward Vote

A Republican sponsored resolution calling for an amendment to the Missouri constitution banning same-sex marriage has been endorsed by committee and now moves to a vote in the full House.

The House Children and Families Committee voted in favor of the amendment 8 - 6 on party lines after two hours of discussion.

If the measure passes both houses it would lead to a referendum on the November ballot.

2. dwickham, I am so tired of this. MA high court had it right, the state

can't deny equal rights under the law. Period. Call it Children and Family act or whatever you want...it is unconstitutional, and the MA court called it on the point.

It's going to go state by state, as it probably should, so we're all "clear" about the rights of fellow Americans. But, damn, it gets old, watching "me" get put up for judgement by a state amendment and then making the choice to speak up or duck....I am being presumed guilty of something and I know that.

in the rethugs' faces. It is petty, mean, vindicative, and is really just a way to appeal to prejudice, ignorance, and fear...

My mother (in Mo) is a staunch defender of all civil rights *except* gay marriage. I have tried to discuss it with her, but it's difficult considering her age (80), and she has been thoroughlly brainwashed to think it always has to be "man-boy", etc. It seems that in Mo. the propoganda has worked well.

13. Sorry, I didn't get back to this thread

last night. Pinto, my Mom & I have locked horns many times over gay issues. I feel very strongly for gay rights, I hope you didn't think I was trying to get in an backdoor insult. The last time I went home to visit, we actually raised our voices about the issue of gay marriage, that particular aspect hadn't been discussed before. However, as she just had two heart attacks that is where my seemingly lukewarm defense came from.

If they were really smart they'd put as much asphalt as possible between themselves and same-sex marriage discussions. State legislators could simply defer it to Congress, who could pass the buck to the courts. But they're not that smart.

This would mean that public school science teachers have to teach "alternatives" to biological science, would be required to post the new state law in all science classrooms, and would be subject to fines and imprisonment if they failed to follow this law.

Oh, and the kicker? The big economic development plan is here all about luring more biotechnology companies to the state.

gay marriage have to be a Federal issue? I don't see how it can be legal in one state and not in another. You do have the right to move to any state you desire, and that is one of those things that has to be uniform in every state... like regular marriage. At least thats how I see it.
Now, I don't agree with gay marriage, but I have a reason why.
It's just not the same as straight marriage, and their are unique issues that need to be adressed.
It should be called something else, and have it's own subsection of laws dealing with those issues, rather than amending and messing up the already messed up marriage and familly laws straight people have already.
Do you see what I mean? It's not that I'm against gay unions/ partnerships, or whatever you want to call it.

There is no federal requirement for states to honor each others' driver's licenses or heterosexual marriage licenses.

I don't see how it can be legal in one state and not in another.

Because marriage affects contracts and taxation the states are going to have to honor each others' same-sex marriage licenses sooner or later. It could get worked out in Congress or it could get worked out in the courts. One way or another it's going to happen.

I've lived in Missouri all of my life, and yes, we have rednecks and morans by the truckload, especially in the sourthern half. But we also have two large urban areas and one college area that are pretty liberal still, and can tip the balance in a close election. An example: Five years ago we had a CCW proposition come up for public vote(first time that had happened in the nation). NRA and all the rest of the gunnies thought it was a lock, especially since they outspent the opposition by ten to one. However when push came to shove, Missourians did the right thing and voted down the CCW bill.

Like I said, you have to write off a good chunk of the southern part of Mo, but the northern half could pull you through on this issue. Have to wait and see.

And yes, some yahoo from southern Mo proposed an intelligent design bill in the General Assembly. Don't worry, it won't pass, we Missourians still want to take delight in laughing at the follies of our fine neighbor Kansas, and if this bill was put into law, how could we make fun of them if we are as stupid as them?
