Hill Probers Fault Iraq Intelligence
Panels Early Findings Are Similar to Kays

The House and Senate intelligence committees have unearthed a series of failures in prewar intelligence on Iraq similar to those identified by former weapons inspector David Kay, leading them to believe that CIA analysts and their superiors did not seriously consider the possibility Saddam Hussein no longer possessed weapons of mass destruction, congressional officials said.

The committees, working separately for the past seven months, have determined that the CIA relied too heavily on circumstantial, outdated intelligence and became overly dependent on satellite and spy-plane imagery and communications intercepts.

"Bipartisanship has become the hardest" to achieve "since I've been on the committee, and I'm very, very sad about it," said Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.), ranking minority member of the House intelligence panel. "This is a serious change. If these intelligence committees can't do it, no one can do it."

1. The NeoCons have been trying to make the CIA the WMD scapegoat...
...for quite some time.

I'm waiting for the CIA's response on this particular subject.

2. It's incredible how they are hanging this on the CIA...
Like Kay, the committees have found that CIA operatives and analysts failed to detect that the Iraqi chain of command for developing chemical, biological and nuclear weapons had fallen apart, and that Iraqi scientists and others were engaged in their own campaign to deceive the Iraqi leader, telling him they had weapons that did not exist.

Good Lord. They're saying the CIA failed to detect the breakdown in Iraq that made WMD impossible.

See what a desperate position that is for the Administration? It cuts off any possibility of claiming Saddam was a real threat going forward, doesn't it? If he had nothing, no programs, no nothing, how could he ever be a threat?

4. Nor is there any mention of Cheney going to the CIA
To tell them what he wanted to hear on the subject of Iraqi weapons. It's a shame we have no national news media anymore. Context, balance and background are forgotten concepts among the media whores.

5. I'm haunted by the last intel "failure"
during the cold war. Intel told us the USSR had huge weapons programs and was economically strong. Then it started to unravel from within and we found out the USSR was like a movie set. Rotten behind the facade painted by OUR intel.

How could we have gotten it so wrong about the USSR everyone asked.

Now, with Iraq, I'm paying more attention and I know that intel didn't get it wrong, intel was politicized. Did Reagan do that too with the USSR? To give more money to defense contractors? To scare Americans into voting for the GOP which everyone knows is better when it comes to national defense.

Vietnam and now this. We are rotten at our core.

6. "Some analysts may have been trying to slow it down"
Uh-huh. Like who? And exactly at what level were their opinions squelched?
