USA TODAY's Paul Wiseman reports that White House spokeswoman Dana Perino is making some climate change-related news of her own.

Speaking to reporters in Japan, where President Bush just wrapped up a meeting of the G8, Perino demanded an apology from Sen. Barbara Boxer after the California Democrat accused her of lying about why the White House ordered a health official to delete references to the health consequences of climate change from congressional testimony.

Perino had said last year that the references were taken out because of doubts about their scientific accuracy. But a former Environmental Protection Agency official said Tuesday that the testimony was changed at the urging of Vice President Cheney, who was seeking to play down the effects of global warming and avoid new regulation of greenhouse gas emissions.

But Perino said White House science adviser John Marburger backed up her version of events, and she was angry that Boxer had questioned her integrity.

“I have never said such a thing about a fellow public servant, and I wouldn’t if I didn’t have all the facts,’’ Perino said. “I think I deserve an apology."
