Rove refuses subpoena, leaves country
Nick Juliano
Published: Thursday July 10, 2008

Update: Conyers gives Rove 5 days to comply before pursuing 'all available options'

Former White House adviser Karl Rove has ignored a subpoena from congressional Democrats to testify about allegations of political pressure at the Justice Department and his alleged role in the prosecution of a former governor of Alabama.

A House subcommittee voted 7-1 Thursday to reject Rove's claim that executive privilege freed him from an obligation to testify, leaving open the possibility the Republican political guru will be held in contempt.

During the hearing, Rep. Chris Cannon (R-UT) revealed that Rove was out of the country. According to the liberal blog ThinkProgress, Rove's lawyer's confirmed that Rove was out of the country “on trip "scheduled long before the subpoena" was sent.”

*****************************************

There's a very revealing video at the link of House proceedings that puts the lie to Rove's claim that his trip was scheduled "long before" the subpoena.

I notice there's NO MENTION whatsoever of exactly WHERE Rove is fleeing too on his .. ahem .. "long scheduled" trip.

I'm thinking ..hmm ... Paraguay perhaps?

7. Yes this would appear to absolve Rove completely of any wrongdoing ...
everyone knows it's only the lilly white innocents that thumb their noses at the law and flee
the country to avoid having to answer inconvenient questions about their crimes in public.

28. I sure hope that sticks!
I hope "open to extradition protocols" doesn't equal "open to bribes".

Did all of the Bush administration exchange their currency? I've often wondered... thinking that would be a big red flag.

93. Rove's Boy Scout past ...
Yes, he was physically abused in the boy scouts no? I always wondered whether his 'abuse' included clandestine sexual abuse from the boy scout counselors, a vocation that has become a breeding ground for pedophiles and whether being a victim opened up a whole new world to his proclivities and sexual orientation.

Jeff Gannon came to be white house press reporter through his connection to Rove, and his exclusive access required a higher up in the administration to nix the standard vetting that would apply to all White House correspondents. It was all just a little too convenient, including of how the issue just disappeared after a while.

14. Well our spineless and gutless Congress could get interpol to do their dirty work.
Issue an international arrest warrant for Karl Rove. Then when Interpol Arrest hims. They can say it was interpol that arrested him not us. But since they arrested him now we have to jail him. But we aren't the bad guys that arrested poor Saint Rove. It's Interpol. Maybe they could do some rendition too. I think Iran would agree to host Rove. We can call that diplomacy. He could be our ghost diplomat to Iran.

not that it surprises me, but - maybe it does. because he has been so brazen with his dirty tricks and politicizing of the government and criminal activities, i guess i thought he wouldn't be a fucking coward. but he is. i certainly do hope that wherever he has slithered off to, he's having a terrible time. i also hope that if and when it's revealed where he is, that government will just go apprehend him for crimes against humanity. he's one of the worst of the worst imo.

But, what the hell, it's not like anyone in Congress has what it takes to do anything about Rove, Bush, Cheney, Ashcroft, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Hughes, Powell, Bremer, etc.

They'll all end up fat, rich and safe, funneling their money to groups intent on rewriting history and erecting statues to them.

63. Well, we know a few things about Rove
1) He will be pardoned before January 20, 2009, regardless of the shitstorm he's been part of;

2) He is once again getting away with murder;

3) He's almost as indestructible as the Teflon crimeboss--in fact, I would probably say he's more dangerous by far as the Mafia crimeboss;

4) Don Siegleman should be freed, because this shows just how influential Rove is;

5) And anyone else who has crossed paths with Rove and disagreed with him is likely now dead, dying, in jail or has had their reputation ruined.

Remember when Hillary was laughed at by so many people by stating that there was a "vast right-winged conspiracy?" Why didn't anyone listen to her? She knew what she was talking about, and still does. But 95% of the right-wing laughed at her, and at least 70% of her own party did as well. It's been very apparent that most people still don't see the truth as it really is.

..of Mr. Gore and Mr. Kerry and countless Democrats at the national level, who refuse to fight back, who refuse to risk anything for the sake of American citizens. At some point, the co-opting of the positions of the radical right by our own party makes it inviable as a party for liberals and progressives. It's damned near that point.

That alone is enough to get him arrested overseas and brought back to face charges.

But maybe better than that is some country arresting him for being an international war criminal. Like some country that will hold a person until they have enough evidence.

Let's find out where he went to and alert activists there. Maybe Rove can be jailed in the country he fled to.

for our rubber-stamp-dumb-as-dirt-whore-congresswoman, Thelma "Caught Red Handed" Drake. Yep, the same idiot who sponsored Webb's GI Bill in Congress (her congressional district is heavily military, taking in all of Virginia Beach and some of Norfolk and the Peninsula)and then voted against it.

Talk about suicide! Rove as her fund raiser???!!!

Plus, this time we have a GREAT Democratic candidate, Glenn Nye, to run against her.

I guess now if Rove shows up here, we should make a citizens' arrest. We were going to hold a mock trial, but out and out arrest would be even better!

But I have a lot of other questions... For now this:
If he is trying to say h has executive priviledge, doesn't that mean that his travel would have to be cleared by the state department? (not sure, not a lawyer, just asking)
Also, What about his new employer... Fox? Wouldn't they have some idea about this?

Plus, Well seriously, how did Representative Cannon know and no one else?

The Entire story smells and no one knows where this f*cker is. I have been looking all over the place for something --- anything. I might actually call FISA... (ok my sister, but FISA REALLY loves me) :sarcasm:

99. The effect of the Rove pardon
Bush can immunize Rove from criminal prosecution for the crimes he's committed. He can't immunize Rove from an obligation to testify in response to a subpoena.

In fact, if Rove were to testify now, it's conceivable that he'd respond to some questions by refusing to answer and invoking the Fifth Amendment. If Bush has pardoned him, though, then he's no longer at risk of criminal prosecution and isn't entitled to plead self-incrimination.

By the way, I'm no extradition expert, but I'd have to wonder if the wording of the extradition treaties allows the procedure to be used for a mere subpoena, as opposed to an arrest warrant.

Luis Posada Carriles, a right-wing terrorist lives there freely now, even though other countries have been trying to extradite him. So does his cohort, fellow bomber/mass murderer/terrorist Orlando Bosch, and many others.

That's Bush's vote base, his "homeys" and the home of Jeb and Bush #41's business partners, and CIA operatives, including the Watergate burglars.

137. Karl Rove: Taco Bell Republican
I'd been hoping for a rash of Bushie insiders and other corrupt Republicans making "runs for the border" as the Boosh regime begins to implode, but after watching House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's timidity, I was afraid that the congressional leadership would continue with their "non-partisan" "let bye-gones be bye-gones" foolishness rather than do what's right for the country. I am quite pleased to see Karl Rove be one of the first "Taco Bell" Republicans.

I hope that House and Senate Democrats will develop some desparately-needed intestinal fortitude and there will be a lot more "Taco Bell" Republicans in the months and years to come.

:grr:

whenever these 5 days are up he needs to be held for contempt. This is getting worse than ridiculous and if he testifies NOT under oath it will be ludicrous.

proceedings in such place in which the commission of an offense
punishable by death or which is a felony under the laws of such
place, is charged, or (3) to avoid service of, or contempt
proceedings for alleged disobedience of, lawful process requiring
attendance and the giving of testimony or the production of
documentary evidence before an agency of a State empowered by the
law of such State to conduct investigations of alleged criminal
activities, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more

Does this apply in Rove's case?

Rove may have just committed another very serious felony.

Flight to avoid prosecution or giving testimony

"Rove may have just committed another very serious felony."

So why don't we cancel his passport, contact the Interpol to have him picked up and held wherever he may have sought asylum.

162. So, Obama and Clinton's passport records were broken into
but we can't find anyone, who can look into Karl's passport records and find out where he went legally?

I remember the days when the media would set up shop on the lawn of people, no matter how tangential, involved with the investigations in the Clinton administration but they can't do it when Bush's Brain is involved? Let's review. The press knew that Monica Lewinski was being subpoenaed and they went nuts. They seemed to have carte blanche as they tracked down everyone that ever knew Monica. There was non-stop talk about breaches of ethics and a public discussion of what the scope of Presidential privileges and culpability were. The media had debates on what the meaning of what "is is" as well as the meaning of "high crimes and misdemeanors" in relationship to a President's non-Executive decision and fitness for the office.

The press has known about Rove and the subpoena. But where are the debates? Where are the cameras following people around and digging into their past? What happened to having hordes of reporters following people around and knowing their every move? What ever happened to the "stained blue dress" press of the '90's? I guess since Russert died the media has lost their connection to Bush's inner circle. Or, they just aren't doing their jobs.
