Billboard displays burning World Trade Center with slogan, 'Please Don't Vote for a Democrat
Source: Raw Story

A political billboard in St. Cloud, Florida reads "Please Don't Vote for a Democrat" over an image of the burning World Trade Center.

Businessman Mike Meehan, who paid for the ad, says he's "only trying to help Republicans." The billboard also carries a link for Meehan's website, TheRepublicanSong.com, at which he says, "I claim to be a man of God" and promotes his political song and video.

Meehan's song, which appears to have racist overtones, begins, "The Democrat secular progressive move, political correctness is killing us too. They want to take the money from the hard working man, and give it to the lazy folks that don't give a damn."

Full story and video news report at the link.

31. Indeed, you overestimate people...
I am originally from Florida and I can verify The Stranger's statement. Florida is almost as bad as Texas where the people are ignorant and very proud of it. I'm so happy I don't live there anymore. Actually the southern states should be allowed to secede. After a generation they will suffocate under the weight of their own ignorance and we can reunite the rest.

47. I have been reluctant to say this, but...
...do we in fact really need the southern tier of states? I mean, exactly what is Florida doing for us? Or should I say "to us"?

I feel less and less affinity for the kind of person that seems to dominate in the south, although the rural areas here in Ohio seem to be filled with the same kind of shallow, non-thinking drones that I picture being everwhere down south. My God, we're surrounded by them! They're worse than cylons.

50. shhh...that's dangerous subversive talk.
I'm a founding member of the secret underground group Yankees for Texas Secession. We'll be contacting you shortly regarding the creation of a Florida cell.

I wonder if when we force Dixie to secede from the union, will there be a second Civil War...with a novel twist: This time the South fights to stay IN the union? Or perhaps they accept their fate and the independent Confederacy quickly votes to re-legalize slavery...only to have the African-American population take power and enslave all the redneck white guys. Then they're forced to put tractor tires on their NASCAR cars and plow the fields for the black plantation owners.

And just to complete the picture, imagine our Yankee airwaves free of "country" music...and no more Walmarts or Southern Baptists. In the end, democracy will be restored to Yankee-topia, the Republic thrives once more, bluebirds singing outside my window in each morning...

This business of making a list of all the people to be excluded from the U.S. of A. is something I hear quite a bit...from right-wing e-mails. DUers shouldn't fall for the mirror image of that mind-set.

Besides, we all get carried away with statistics. Granted, you can get 75 percent of Manhattan to vote for a Democratic candidate, but red and blue states aren't really 100 percent anything.

33. World Citizen, that wont move the average American citizen
Guilt rarely motivates in a positive way. In fact, it makes many people uncomfortable or resentful. You put those two billboards, yours and his, side by side and which one do you think is going to matter more to the driver by? Foreign orphans or a national symbol destroyed? Sorry. One's closer to home.

Now if you showed a billboard of 1 million sick American children without health care that is closer to home too but still not as strong as a national symbol. That's the shakes.

66. of course you and I know that
but it's lost in the rebuttal's explanation. It has to stand on its own and be very specific and very American.

The Repugs dont own the rights to patriotism and America. We dont have to grab the scraps of worldly views which make us seem like a bunch of New World Order crazies. We are Americans. We can speak about this great nation. That's all that matters right now. Our economy. Our health care. Our gas. Our cost of Living. Our sons and daughters in harm's way. Its all about US right now. And it is going be more about US. Foreign policy matters in only as much as it works for US. And that's the truth of the times. The economies of many nations are going to be suffering soon - you think we and our well being are going to be foremost on their minds? It maybe selfish but at this point especially with how things are going, those are going to be the views of this country as we have to buckle down and weather the harsh storms coming. It's about sand bags and joining hands here. US joining together. NOW.

U.S. = us

68. I see you point re....
strategy in advertising. I disagree about most everything else. I don't think that encouraging human morality qualifies as "grabbing scraps of worldly view." I am human way before I am American. I believe that humanity matters more that some political line drawn on a map. I believe that it is aggressive imperialistic policy that has gotten us into this mess in the first place. I sounds like what you are say is "they don't care about us so why should we care about them." The answer is, because they are human. As Pablo Casals said: "The love of one's country is a splendid thing. But why should love stop at the border?"

human = me

69. pssst...I actually agree
I'd love to have billboards that talk about humane efforts for the world, primarily helping people who never hurt anyone (dont get me started on terrorist scum though- I have no sympathy for them ever). The bills could ponder Buddhist sayings hourly and urge us to meditate on the the universal oneness of everything (which I often do) but that wont save the election. People are already showing Obama on a white pony with rainbows and and chanting "Change" and snickering at it. We need muscle. We need to speak to Americans not just to their higher selves. Most of us cannot maintain that perch for very long anyway.

7. Was that the 9/11 that occured under Clinton? I'm confused...
There was a President's Daily Brief delivered to the, um, President on August 6, 2001, that explicitly warned about plans to attack large buildings using planes. It appears that the brief was ignored by the President, or at best not taken seriously. Now, the President at that time was... um, George W. Bush. Hang on a sec while I Google him... Okay, that's what I thought: Mr. Bush is a, ah, Republican.

unfortunately you can't watch the video from the guy's website, probably due to traffic, but you can listen to the song. The website is also an example of some of the finest misuse of quotation marks I've seen to date. Check it out:

I claim to be a man of God and like millions of others, I love this great nation, “The United States of America.”

I wrote this song to encourage and motivate as many people as possible not to vote for a “Democrat” in the 2008 Presidential Election.

he's just sarcastically questioning the existence of the United States of America. Much like when I type "Jesus".

We need to explain to him the difference between professing and having faith. I too "claim to be a man of God" when it suits me.

I suspect, Mr. Meehan, that if there really is a God, we're both equally fucked.

My uncle has never been the same since that day. He was an NYPD cop. He spent months sorting through TRASH on Staten Island, looking for human remains, because George Bush and his administration couldn't be bothered paying attention to the 6 August memo. He retired not long after.
My father almost died that day. He was the floor volunteer for his office, making sure that everyone got out in case of emergencies. At that time 7 years ago, he had two children under 10 besides my two sisters and myself. He has a heart condition. He has never been the same.
My mother helped friends bury their spouses and comforted another whose psyche was shattered when she realized that she alone survived out of her office because she went in late. She lived in fear that we were about to be nuked.
I lived in California and could do nothing but watch in horror and scream.
My family was very lucky in comparison. We suffered a lifetime of emotional wounds.

Republicans were in charge. Republicans could have prevented 9/11. Your disgusting use of that day to advance your own political beliefs makes you an extremely low human being in my book.
I believe in God. But you and I mustn't believe in the same one.

You claim to be a Christian. You don't act like one though. Many Democrats are Christians, following the precepts of Jesus, as laid out in The Beatitudes.

I pray that you someday see the light, and follow the teachings of our Lord and Savior - not the rantings of those who wrap themselves in the Bible without understanding the meaning, also known as the Bush acolytes, also called Neocons.

Another quote from the article:

Even Republicans have found the billboard "inappropriate," and many residents want it to come down. "I'm thinking about the Twin Towers, all the families that were killed there," one woman told local TV affliate WFTV.

Another local was more accepting, saying, "They can have their opinion. It's a free country, you want to pay for the ad."

ETA this quote from a news blurb at their local tv web page http://www.wftv.com/news/16879991/detail.html

Orange County Democrats are calling for the billboard to come down and the local Republican Party has said the ad is "inappropriate." Meehan hadn't returned Channel 9 calls or e-mails Monday afternoon, but some are defending his right to free speech.

Clearly, there is no depth whatever to which the right will not stoop. This guy sounds like a rich bigot, in other words a Republican. Jerk.

56. All they have is fear to peddle...
Fools like this are seen as the jerks they are. A few will wet themselves as they see the billboard and shake in fear...but truth of the matter is, if aD had been in the WH on 9-11, quite possibly, it would never have happened.

Regardless, this is all they have, cheap shots, and terrorists behind every tree and rock. Truly pathetic...can't this fool see that the R's have just made the situation even worse?

Republican president waved off specific warnings about al-Quaida being determined to strike in the US (per his Aug. 6, 2001 presidential briefing).

The fact that this set of circumstances has always been considered an effective selling point for Republican candidates is evidence that the American electorate has its colleelctive head up its collective rear end.

71. WTC has nothing to do with Dems...
it happened on Repukes watch, who had control of everything at the time.

So, the billboard is a fuckin' lie. not surprising coming from nutsacks like Mike Meehan.

"The Democrat secular progressive move, political correctness is killing us too. They want to take the money from the hard working man, and give it to the lazy folks that don't give a damn." to funny, to bad it is inaccurate.

The republican fascist move, political warmongering is killing us too. They want to take everything from everyone, and give it to themselves, for all I care the repig bastards can go straight to hell!

I'm assuming you'll still want to attempt it after hearing what must surely be the most talentless creature I've ever subjected my poor, unsuspecting ears to in a long time.

Warning: You will HATE yourself for even spending a second or two on the "song." A tone-deaf school choir could produce something better during lunch hour.

83. Is Mike Meehan a US Citizen?
His bio on his website says he moved to Florida with his family from Canada. His bio does not say whether he ever became a naturalized citizen. This itself is not a problem. There are a lot of people who are legally here and contributing to a country that they love without being citizens. But this guy is wrapping himself in the flag, telling us how to vote, and using a horrible disaster to make political points-- and it's not even clear whether he can even vote in the election.
