Drug for deadly prostate cancer
Source: BBC News

Scientists are hailing a new drug to treat aggressive prostate cancer as potentially the most significant advance in the field for 70 years.

Abiraterone could potentially treat up to 80% of patients with a deadly form of the disease resistant to currently available chemotherapy, they say.

The drug works by blocking the hormones which fuel the cancer.

The Institute of Cancer Research hopes a simple pill form will be available in two to three years.

4. Sadly, if either method worked
Edited on Tue Jul-22-08 07:12 AM by FlaGranny
prostate cancer would be much rarer. Both methods are protective against prostate cancer, but it happens anyway, even among sexually active men, and some very young men. Don't ever think it couldn't happen to you and DO get those exams and PSA tests.

11. Haha! I haven't been called "cute"
in a long time. :-)

I HATE cancer and what it does to people and I don't want any good Democrats thinking they can avoid cancer just by having a "good time." Would that it were so. ;-)

7. The prostate cancer 'wonder pill' set to save thousands every year
Source: Daily Mail Online

British researchers have made a dramatic breakthrough against a lethal form of prostate cancer.

Trials of a new pill have shown that it can shrink tumours in up to 80 per cent of cases, and end the need for damaging chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Experts hailed the advance as potentially the biggest in the field of prostate cancer for decades, capable of saving many thousands of lives.

Scientists believe the technique could also be effective on other tumours, such as breast and bowel cancers.
