Source: Times of India

28 Jul 2008, 0012 hrs IST,PTI

WASHINGTON: Chinese people are confident about their nation’s place on the world stage but a poll highlights "significant tensions" between China and other rival powers, including India with 24% viewing New Delhi as an "enemy".

Overwhelmingly, the Chinese think their country is popular abroad with roughly three-in-four (77%) believing people in other countries generally have favourable opinions of China.

However, the 2008 survey by the Pew Research Centre’s Pew Global Attitudes Project highlights significant tensions between China and other rival powers.

Views about India are "mixed at best" with 25% viewing India as a partner, while a similar number 24% describe it as an enemy, it said. Chinese view Japan with hostility. Views toward Japan are especially negative 69% have an unfavourable opinion of the country. Almost 38% of Chinese consider Japan an enemy.

21. At least slightly more view India as a partner not an enemy. The US is considered
an enemy by 34% while only 13% consider it to be a partner.

Japan is perceived even worse, with 38% of Chinese considering them to be an enemy.

I wondered why the article focused on a negative view of India by Chinese, until I realized that it was an Indian newspaper article.

"Most Chinese also recognise the growing impact their economy has on others around the world, and they believe it is a positive impact. Only 3% of Chinese think their economy is hurting other countries. As they eagerly await the Beijing Olympics, the Chinese people express extraordinary levels of satisfaction with the way things are going in their country and with their nation’s economy. " (Now the 3% figure is an interesting insight into Chinese public opinion. I would never have guessed that the figure would be so low. I guess Americans are not the only nationality that doesn't understand what "foreigners" really are thinking.)

"Overwhelmingly, the Chinese think their country is popular abroad with roughly three-in-four (77%) believing people in other countries generally have favourable opinions of China. " (Didn't Americans used to think that we were this popular abroad? Maybe there is a correlation between thinking things are going well at home and thinking that your country is popular abroad.)

5. Fears of a 'no-fun' Olympics in Beijing alternate headline
"No blacks not allowed"

snip

Beijing police have been visiting bar owners in the popular Sanlitun area and asking them to sign pledges agreeing to not serve black people or Mongolians and ban activities including dancing.

Bar owners said that police have been clamping down on black people and Mongolians, who are sometimes implicated in drug dealing and prostitution, as part of an Olympic clean-up campaign that they and locals fear will make for a secure but sterile Games.

20. I wonder if there's an age distribution at work.
Or if those aware of territorial disputes and the military actions in the '60s just pattern with those who see enemies everywhere, or don't distinguish between military and economic rivalry.

Not enough info.

22. If I were India, I'd be very worried.
20+ years of Chinese mandated "single child policy" resulting in a huge surplus male population that are all now military aged.

How long before a sexually frustrated male population is pointed at a neighboring country and told "go get 'em boys"?

23. China and India are not enemies.
There are sectors in India that do see China as a threat - wrongly so. The disputes of the 1960's are no more. They are both large developing countries with an interest in cooperative relations and in opposing superpower politics.
