Cries of bias mount as Cowboys denied Hall pass

11:08 AM CST on Wednesday, February 4, 2004

By JEAN-JACQUES TAYLOR / The Dallas Morning News

Paul Zimmerman, furious that Bob Hayes was denied an opportunity at football immortality, is sick and tired of the Pro Football Hall of Fame's selection process.

To prove it, the longtime Sports Illustrated writer resigned from the nine-member Senior Selection Committee.

As a member of that committee, Zimmerman spent much of the last year doing extensive research and interviews with media members and contemporaries of the players deemed worthy of Hall of Fame induction.

When the whole selection panel met Saturday, Brown gained entry to the Hall of Fame. Hayes did not.

1. Truly a miscariage of justice
Bob Hayes revolutionized the game. He is no more of a criminal than Lawrence Taylor, and less of a criminal than OJ. He belongs in the Hall.

2. Truly sad
I no longer follow football, but growing up I was quite the Dallas football fan. Grew up in a home with 5 brothers in Texas, so you had to join in. I remember many thrilling moments Bob Hayes contributed to football. Bob Hayes is more than deserving of Hall of Fame status, and this is very disturbing. This whole good old boy network in sport's businesses is one thing that turned me off the sport.

3. Disgraceful
I'm 100% behind the good doctor on this one....why is Bob Hayes still being penalized for his drug use, but not Lawrence Taylor?

I read something that Peter King (a writer I absolutely detest) wrote on the Hayes debacle...he was basically defending his non-support of Hayes by saying he didn't think Hayes changed the game all that much. He actually said "There were fast guys in the league before Hayes" This is the kind of mentality that has denied Bob Hayes his rightful place in the Hall of Fame.

5. As a life long Packer fan I hate the Cowboys yet there is no doubt
that Hayes belongs in the Hall.
