Delay election, Tories plead (Cdn Politics) - Toronto Star

OTTAWA—The new Conservative party released its first set of policies yesterday and at the same time asked the Liberals to put off the expected spring election to give it more time to get ready.

"We're building, we're scrambling and we're doing quite well but we're not ready to fight an election," Conservative Senator Noël Kinsella said. "Therefore Canadians don't have a choice."

Kinsella yesterday called on the Liberals to delay the creation of seven new ridings until June and effectively postpone the expected spring election until the fall.

"It's tremendously important for the Conservative Party of Canada to complete the work we're doing. I think it's a question of fair play," he said in an interview yesterday.

The Liberals want the new ridings to take effect April 1 in order to go to the polls in April or May. That's just two weeks after the Conservatives are slated to pick a new leader. And it gives little time for the new party to formulate policy, Kinsella said.

-That's right folks, get the excuses out early, just in case you elect that totally unelectable candidate. Or the other unelectable candidate. Or Stephen Harper. In the words of that great US social commentator, Nelson Muntz - Haw haw!

1. They are a lost cause
Since Mulroney brought about the decimation of the Progressive Conservative party, an honourable party till he took over and ruined it with his hated policies, they have been trying to make a comeback....Joining up with the right wingers of the Alliance has only made things worse for them....Canadians will NEVER elect a right wing party to govern us, no matter how long they take to get ready!
What are they at in the polls now?...12%?...15%?

2. I am always wary, but there does not seem to be an good outcome for them
from this mess they're in. Wouldn't it be ironic, after years of complaining about the mythical 'right-wing vote split' that a merger kills them?

3. Election....
It's tremendously important for the Conservative Party of Canada to complete the work we're doing.

Only to them. They're the Canadian flavour of the Repugs. Bring on the spring election!

{We don't want them in any more than thinking Americans want Bush to win in the US.}

4. And who's fault is it?
They knew going into the merger that the election was likely in the Spring. Martin will not delay for their benefit.

Actually, I think they're likely to do better in the Spring anyway, getting whatever bounce they can from the attention of a leadership campaign, than in the Fall, when the ugly reality of their choice - whomever it is - has had time to sink in to their membership and the rest of Canada.

5. I'm all for fair elections...
but it was well known the liberals wanted an election this spring, and I really don't think Martin is interested in helping the Conservatives get their "shit" together.

This is good for the NDP. Jack keeps saying the right things and hopefully they snag the opposition.

6. God they're pathetic...
What a bunch of whiners--I thought they already conceeded this election anyhow...they are more interested in the next one (assuming of course they are still around and haven't self-destructed into 3 or 4 'unite the right' parties again)

7. Delay would be disastrous for Martin
He needs to get this election over with before more details surface about that $161 million for his company.

8. To Hell with the right
To Hell with the right, they are just a bunch of blundering, blustering idiots. Canadians, for the love of God, in the next election vote either Liberal or NDP. Go Paul Martin, Kill 'em all.
