Sheriff named in evidence planting of Kevin Cooper's case
Edited on Thu Feb-05-04 08:08 PM by tinanator
Just breaking on Flashpoints.net a reporter who covered Kevin Cooper's trial has presented a second sworn declaration naming a Sheriff (Al Anthony Ruiz) who admitted on 11-5-1997 being told to plant evidence in the case. This is serious stuff, and if Arnold doesnt halt the execution, then Houston, we have a problem. "Kevin Cooper did not kill that family. When the Justice Department wants you, they will get you"

1. Not only did they plant evidence
A latino woman came forward with bloody overalls of her boyfriend who is the likely murderer. That evidence disappeared and the Ryan's youngest son said 4 latino's killed his family not a black man.

I have been following this case since law school..if Cooper is put to death, this will be a travesty and Schwartzenegger has so far declined..not that Davis would have been any better on this point.

2. I am unfamiliar with the case - but it demonstrates how right Gov. Ryan
was and how ugly Bush's response on the campaign trail was (that in texas they are always right, there are no mistakes made in the justice system and therefor there is no situation where an innocent man might be put to death... BUT in Texas there are documented cases of drunk and/or sleeping defense attorneys and all sorts of forms of gross inappropriate going ons in death penalty cases making it quite probable (given bush's lack of concern and review - he wouldn't catch it as governor) that he presided over at least one (or more) executions of innocent citizens.

Guess arrogant smarmy arnie is about to do the same.

3. Kevin Cooper was convicted in the 80's for murdering 4 members
of the Ryan family and leaving the youngest son for dead. The youngest son has always maintained it was 4 latinos that killed his family and exculpatory evidence was said to be destroyed by the San Bernardino county police...IIRC, several members of the jury have stated that had they been aware of the evidence they would not have voted to convict and several have written letters on his behalf asking that his death penalty be overturned...he is scheduled to die this week

4. This doesn't sound too good.
I don't know all the facts of this case but one of the main reasons why I don't care for the death penalty is that innocent men and women could be put to death (and probably already have).

5. anybody care about state murder?
just wondering? The ramifications here go far beyond "an innocent person might fall between the cracks". What are the prevailing concerns in these parts? Evicting GW and only that?
