UN watchdog tells of nuclear 'supermarket'
By Ian Traynor
Vienna
February 7, 2004

The United Nations' top nuclear official has called for a new international regime to destroy the flourishing black market in nuclear technology, describing current controls as "kaput".

"Khan is the tip of an iceberg for us," he said "You need a complete overhaul of the export control system. This is a number one international security problem we are facing.

A Dubai-based British businessman is also believed to be involved, although the British Foreign Office said it had no knowledge of him.

The US has strongly defended Mr. Musharraf, despite his pardon of the man who sold nuclear secrets to Libya, and to Iran and Korea, two states that helped make up President George Bush's "axis of evil".
