Hagel's remarks on Palin irk GOP
Source: Omaha World Herald

Chuck Hagel's words have ruffled GOP
September 2008: On Sarah Palin: "I think it's a stretch to, in any way, to say that she's got the experience to be president of the United States."

November 2007: On the Bush administration: "I have to say this is one of the most arrogant, incompetent administrations I've ever seen or ever read about."

May 2007: On the GOP: "I am not happy with the Republican Party today. It's been hijacked by a group of single-minded almost isolationist insulationists, power-projectors."

January 2007: On President Bush's plan to send an additional 20,000 troops to Iraq: "The most dangerous foreign policy blunder in this country since Vietnam."

December 2005: On ruffling party feathers: "I took an oath of office to the Constitution. I didn't take an oath of office to my party or my president."

8. He might endorse Obama but
You'll never win Nebraska.

Hagel is from my home town here in Columbus(Population 20,000 or so). He is not exactly liked around here, mainly because he tends to support Democratic philosophies as of late. That simply doesn't set right with alot of people in town because they are too used to voting party lines, therefore Hagel, is a TRAITOR to most.

Which is kinda sad. He's GOP, but as of late, I have kind of liked his thinking... I can cross party lines and agree with him, it's too bad others on the other side refuse to do the same.

16. Indeed, it does not
I remember reading about a reporter asking what did his republican coleagues in the Senate say about his decision to go on the Middle East trip with Obama, and Hagel simply answered "I did not ask for their permission". Nice.

15. How does agreeing with Hagel's Democratic views cause you to cross Party lines?
Edited on Fri Sep-19-08 11:33 AM by Winterblues
Or do you agree with his Republican views as well?

19. It's not so much
It's not so much that I would be crossing party lines, but rather I'd be agreeing with someone who holds a different party position. For a while, my local paper was speculating the chance of Obama picking Hagel as his VP running mate, to which my response was "HA", but the GOP in town viewed him more as a traitor and said good riddance. They also seem to think he's just sucking up, which makes no sense since he is not running for re-election, and as far as I know, doesn't intend to run for any type of government office in the future... but I COULD however, see him crossing over and turning into a Democrat.

21. Going against the grain makes his independent thinking more impressive.
I suppose that's why he's not running for re-election?

30. I'm in Omaha..
I think he could possibly win 1 of our 5 electoral votes - the Omaha congressional district. I don't think he'll be able to win the whole state though.. frankly - many Republicans are starting to hate him here (ironically, some Independants and right leaning Dem's are starting to love him though). For a repug- he's about as good as it gets.. but he's still Pro-Life, and Anti-Gay.. so on social issues, i'd never vote for him.

But, it's nice to see my red state have the guy who's giving the GOP a taste of their own Liberman. ;)

22. It's not progressive.
It endorsed Lieberman for president in 2004.

http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/01/07/elec04.prez.lieberman.newrepublic/index.html

New Republic is the pseudo-Democratic voice of neo-conservatism, cousin of National Review.

24. Agreed. And they seem to have improved since 2004.
But they definitely used to piss me off. But there's probably little readership for a "Lieberman Democrat" journal, so they've appropriately adapted.

20. Maybe They Could Trade
...except that Hagel is retiring and Lieberman will be around for a while, even if he ends up with an office that used to be a men's room stall after the upcoming shift in Senate balance of power.

26. A little more isolationism would be nice, actually.
We are far from isolationists, but we are certainly "power-projectors."
