Gephardt Endorses Kerry for President By James Rainey, Times Staff Writer
Rep. Dick Gephardt, who quit the presidential race following a disappointing finish in the Iowa caucuses, endorsed his front-running former rival, Sen. John Kerry, for the Democratic presidential nomination today.
"To beat George Bush, we need a leader who can go toe-to-toe with George Bush in these difficult times," Gephardt said at a rally, while the senator from Massachusetts stood at his side.
Citing Kerry's experience, particularly in national security matters, Gephardt, from Missouri, said the Democrats needed a candidate "who can walk into that Oval Office tomorrow afternoon and be a great president of the United States."
"That leader is John Kerry, and I'm proud to endorse him to be president of the United States of America," Gephard said.
