Sheriff Dave Reichert is congratulated by
supporters after announcing that he will
seek to succeed Jennifer Dunn in the GOP-
leaning 8th District.BELLEVUE -- King County Sheriff Dave Reichert said yesterday that he was unprepared for Rep. Jennifer Dunn's surprise announcement last Friday that she's retiring from Congress, and then went on to prove it.
In becoming the first Republican to leap into the race to succeed Dunn in the GOP-leaning 8th District, the career lawman made his partisan debut as a political question mark, unwilling to disclose his views on policy issues.
Some skeptical Republicans are waiting for him to flesh out his claim that he is a conservative, especially as the would-be heir to Dunn, a local conservative icon.
At a news conference at a Bellevue hotel, Reichert said he entered law enforcement because "from the time I was a young boy, I knew that I wanted to help." He said he is running for Congress because "I want to do this in a bigger way" and has thought about "how to make this world a more secure place."
