Romney urges states to define institution

Governor Mitt Romney took his fight against same-sex marriage to the national level yesterday in a Wall Street Journal column urging his fellow governors and state lawmakers to act quickly to define marriage as a heterosexual institution to avoid having a court decide otherwise.

"There are lessons from my state's experience that may help other states preserve the rightful participation of their legislatures and citizens and avoid the confusion now facing Massachusetts," Romney wrote in the column, "A Citizen's Guide to Protecting Marriage," published on the Journal's editorial page.

"We must now act to preserve the voice of the people and the representatives they elect," the column concluded.

1. What "confusion" Mitt?

I'm not confused and I'm just a dumb old southern boy. You are an arrogant, hateful homophobe, no confusion whatsoever mitt. Conservatives will maintain the sanctity of marriage by preventing people who love each other from getting married. That makes about as much sense as ceasing to love a person once they are born. Oops, conservtives do that too.

2. The only upshot to this effort...

is that it may distract attention from an amendment long enough to not get it passed in this legislative session. The longer the same-sex marriages exist, the less likely an amendment will be ratified by the people who are nearly divided on the issue.

3. Finneran & Romney use their religion against gay marriage

Catholics and Mormons are both against all gay issues. It doesn't surprise me that both are against this. They are both against abortion, also. Romney even used the word deviant in a discription once towards gays. Now the legislature wants gay marriage brought up at the upcoming constitutional convention so that there will be a vote by the prople for an amendment to the Mass. Constitution that says marriage is between a man and woman. And what are the reasons being floated for this? Why should the 4 judges who made this decision and are not elected choose what's right for everyone? However, it is possible to have the vote be as close as the last Presidential election. Then the question is why should 50.1% have total say over 49.9%%?

4. I would urge states to define "duty to citizens"

as in :

health care for ALL citizens
good, clean, well staffed schools for ALL students
family-supporting jobs for all people
locking up the rich guys who steal money from the middle class & poor
adequate mental health care to get the "crazies" off our streets
drug treatment instead of incarceration
post high school training or 2 years at a community college for all HS grads..FREE
paper and markers to insure "real elections"
jobs that STAY in the US

and so many more..

after these things are "taken care of", they could feel free to address the "moral" issues of the day...in the church/synagogue/temple/mosque/cathedral of their choice

6. Romney is being mentioned

as a possible VP candidate with Bush. (column in Atlanta Journal Constitution today...sorry, I need to get you a link). The Bushies might want to steal some of the attention from the Dems. with a new VP candidate. Plus, Cheney is too synonymous with big, dirty business. Also, the Cheney rep. is taking on more tarnish with the Anton Scalia duck hunt story. And Romney is very Dubya-like. He's on a mission from God.

7. How does MD contitution define common-law marriage?

Anyone know? If the MD constitution is amended to fully define marriage, will this affect those who have previously been recognized as married, and those could be in the future, by virtue of common-law?
