Report: Excessive speed blamed in crash (of Maine Governor)
AUGUSTA (AP) -- The Wednesday collision of Gov. John Baldacci's van and another car in which the governor and his state police driver were injured was attributable to the speed of the van.

And that speed was estimated at between 55 and 65 miles an hour, according to an investigative report released Friday.

State police investigators said that estimated speed was "excessive for existing conditions" along an icy and salted stretch of Interstate 295 in Bowdoinham.

The accident occurred shortly after 6 a.m. as Baldacci was being driven from the state capital of Augusta, where he resides, to a Chamber of Commerce breakfast in Portland, according to his office.
