In a letter to the House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct, Public Citizen asked officials to investigate whether Tauzin began negotiating for a job with PhRMA while crafting the legislation. If he did, he may have violated House conflict of interest rules. The job offer is rumored to be worth $2.5 million, likely the largest compensation package on record for anyone at a trade association.

The fix was in from the get-go, we decided. What's 2.5 million to the pharmaceutical industry, which will make at least $100 Billion (with a B) off this legislation? And gee, a week after its passage, the White House "adjusted" the figures to add another $130 billion to its cost. The trade off? Unconditional and unlimited financial support for Bush. Congrats to the pharmaceutical industry. They have now surpassed the insurance industry as the scum of the earth.

I understand that now the Delay/Hastert threats extend not only to Repubs--and Dems--already elected, but to potential voters in elections as well. In the Kentucky 6th District Special Election, Hastert reportedly made a not-so-veiled threat to kill any Tobacco Program Buy-Out if his Repub stooge was not elected over Ben Chandler.
