Seattle area is no lock for Kerry
(snip)

Home to Starbucks, Microsoft, Nirvana and a deep strain of anti-establishment liberalism, the Seattle area was at the heart of the Internet-powered Dean youth movement last year.

Comic-strip character Alex Doonesbury, perhaps the nation's best-known "Deaniac," hails from here. But her hero is nowhere to be found in these parts, having pulled up stakes in Washington after nine straight losses to make a last stand in the Feb. 17 Wisconsin primary.

"Dean's got a good organization, but the wheels are falling off," said Bryan Jones, a political science professor at the University of Washington. "If he can't carry Washington, I would say he's a spoiler at best."

(snip)

"Washington has kind of an edgy liberalism which enjoys someone who's bucking the status quo, bucking the establishment," he said. "And Dean has done that, and that has been a big part of his base here."

(snip)

"This is just a state where people don't like George Bush," Berendt said. "We've rejected the Bush family three times in the state of Washington, and we're going for a fourth."

3. I'm so proud to live in Washington!
"This is just a state where people don't like George Bush," Berendt said. "We've rejected the Bush family three times in the state of Washington, and we're going for a fourth."

That's Paul Berendt, the Chairman of the Washington Democratic Party. He's one of two high profile state Dems that have endorsed Dean. (the other is Congressman Jim McDermott) Pretty much all the other elected officials have endorsed Kerry. I'm sure Dean will do well in the Seattle metro area, and probably on the east side (hitech area). I wouldn't be surpised though, to have Kerry win, or place a real close second. There is still a very active union membership in this area, and a ton of veterans.

4. Berendt is No Friend of Reformers
He was involved with the scuttling of our primary system. Typical Demopublican.

5. Perhaps.
But the establishment all went toward Kerry, and even local cultural gurus like Sherman Alexie have been peeing their pants at every chance they can get to compare Dean to Nader in public. And this began last summer! I talked to Sherman after his performance at the Northwest Bookfest in October. It was clear that he really had no idea who Dean was, where he came from, or what he stood for. Ugh.

By the way, I love Sherman's work.

6. I just got back from my Caucus
We were divided 2 delegates for Kerry and 2 Delegates for Dean. I started with Kucinich, then switched to Dean, we almost got 1 delegate for DK. Pretty strong Kerry showing though.

12. I can see that happening "near Seattle"
After all, Medina, Mercer Island, and Lynnwood are "near Seattle", yet are totally different worlds than Seattle proper.
