Six U.S. Governors Visit Iraq
By MARC HUMBERT, Associated Press Writer
The governors of New York, Idaho, Hawaii, Louisiana, Minnesota and Oregon were in Iraq on Tuesday on a two-day trip arranged by the Bush administration.
The trip had been kept tightly under wraps until the governors arrived in Iraq, and for security reasons the governors are spending their nights in Amman, Jordan.
Aides to New York's Republican Gov. George Pataki called the trip, a first for U.S. governors, a "historic bipartisan governor's tour of Iraq."
Statements by Pataki's office and other governors' offices said they would visit U.S. troops in Iraq, especially those from their own states.
"It is going to be an opportunity, first and foremost, to see our troops," Republican Gov. Dirk Kempthorne of Idaho said in a statement. "I'll be able to directly tell them that their friends and families back home fully support what they are doing."
They were joined by Hawaii's Gov. Linda Lingle and Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, both Republicans; and Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco and Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski, both Democrats.
