Bush's Political Base Seems Restive, Anxious

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Some of George W. Bush's conservative political supporters are increasingly restive and anxious about the president's economic policies as well as his attempts to justify the war against Iraq.

Popular conservative television news anchor Bill O'Reilly, usually an outspoken Bush loyalist, said on Tuesday he was now skeptical about the Bush administration and apologized to viewers for supporting prewar claims that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction.

"I was wrong. I am not pleased about it at all and I think all Americans should be concerned about this," O'Reilly said in an interview with ABC's "Good Morning America."

If you have conservative friends and family members, make sure they hear the criticism of Bush that is coming from the right.

Once people begin to look skeptically at this administration, support for it will crumble.

10. Politically too late - too much blood would flow

The pubes are in the same situation they were in in 1992 - an incumbent president sinking in the polls but too late to switch to another candidate without tearing the party apart. So they will try to make some accomadation. The most likely target is Chaney. They will pin all of the mistakes on him and try to get him to retire gracefully for "health" reasons. Problem will be if he refused to cooperate, but I think he will most likely be a good soldier and comply. Of course then the real fun begins because the replacement choice will be a fight for the soul of the GOP. The fundies will demand someone like Ashcroft while the pragmatists will want to offer someone like Guiliani.

-- love their country and want the best for everyone. W is not one of them. I'm thinking about Lincoln Chafee, Olympia Snowe, and so forth. That sort of Republican SHOULD be nervous about W because he's taking them all down with him.

If the red-state Republicans want to go down with their man, Bush is going to give them a calamitous loss in November. The Democratic ticket will take ALL of Gore's states, PLUS Missouri, Ohio, New Hampshire, and West Virginia. At least.

Bush is cooked.
