GOP aims to end KidCare wait list, tighten eligibility rules

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Republican legislators said Tuesday they'll pass a measure to end a wait for subsidized health insurance for as many as 90,000 children in the coming months, something Democrats have been pressuring them to do.
But the plan could deny coverage to thousands of those children and others already in the program if their family has access to private insurance through work.
The measure being pushed by the GOP would tighten procedures for checking eligibility for the KidCare program in an attempt to keep families with access to health coverage through their employer from taking advantage of the cheaper state plan.
That could dramatically shrink the number of children getting coverage from KidCare, critics immediately charged, potentially leaving thousands without health insurance.
