FARMINGTON -- A part-time freshman from Taiwan at the University of Maine at Farmington may not be able to return to her life in Maine because she volunteered to write columns that celebrated life in Maine for the Franklin Journal.
Immigration officials regard those columns as illegal work because she was paid expenses.
Huei-Ju "Lulu" Yen, a 23-year-old budding writer, remains barred for five years from re-entering the United States, two weeks after she left Maine to spend Chinese New Year with her family at their fishing village home of Keelung in Taiwan.
Left stranded in Maine are not just Yen's books and clothes, but a young woman's hopes reflected in a small body of writing that still moves readers to call the Franklin Journal to offer praise, encouragement and now, their help.
