China: Roses album is 'venomous'
Source: BBC

China has dismissed the new Guns N' Roses album, Chinese Democracy, as a "venomous attack" on the nation.

An article in the Global Times, published by the ruling communist party, says the album, launched this week, "turns its spear point on China".

The title track of the album, which has not been released in China because of the sensitive material, refers to the banned Falun Gong spiritual group.

The album's official website has also been blocked in China.

I feel that this is LBN, when one of the world's most powerful nations feels threatened enough by a rock band to make such a strong statement and to block internet access.

China is merely proving GNR's point by doing all this....

1. Feeling threatened or flexing their muscles and testing their wings? They do appear to be
holding the world's purse strings at the moment.

2. Well, if I were China I would have said something more like:
"Those washed-up has-beens are making a pathetic attempt to sell a few more albums by criticizing our success. We believe that Guns and Roses are trying to create their own "economic miracle," but the truth is, nobody cares and their pitiable attempt to make the proud nation of China look bad will only rebound upon themselves. In 10 years, China will rule the world, whereas Guns and Roses will be utterly forgotten."

Or something to that effect...

6. Venomous?
More like an overproduced, fourth-rate modern Motley Crue-ish album that took 14 years to make.

7. Hey China...
... Axel Rose is lame, and the album is lamer than him. So condemning something that will disappear to the $5.99 bin at Target in two weeks is lamer still.

Are you taking notes from the Pope in U.S. cultural irrelevancy? (See the Vatican's "explanation" of John Lennon earlier this week)

8. Won't somebody think of the children?
When I lived in China a couple years back, Guns N Roses was huge. I mean, only Michael Jackson and the Backstreet Boys were bigger (yes, this was only a couple years ago).

I even had a student whose English name was Axl. He'd chosen it out of devotion to the band. The college I worked for would often play Guns N Roses over the PA system on the campus for our enjoyment. They were as big as anything you could imagine.

I wonder what the kids in China will think of their precious GNR now?

I remember they'd been tossing that album title around for a decade or so. Well here it is...

China has nothing to worry...like anyone outside of China cares what their government thinks about other nation's culture.

He seemed to have a real streak of dating models and beating them afterwards.

Call him "Bill". His name is William Rose. Axl is his stage name. He doesn't deserve a cool name.

16. I don't think criticizing
chinas government should count as racist. I have a few complaints about them myself (like what they've done with Tibet and trying to poison the rest of the world every couple of weeks).

28. Axl would not be criticizing the Chinese government
If his past lyrics are any indication, he would be criticizing the Chinese for being Chinese.

15. Why is China worried about a band that claims to be named GnR? Axl is just a white Michael Jackson!
All I have to say is f*** Axl Rose! Especially when he dissed my favorite band "Eagles of Death Metal" and called them the "Pigeons of S*** Metal."

P.S. I saw EODM in Atlanta at the CW Centre Stage last Saturday, it was awesome!

Oh yeah, here is an interview Jesse Hughes did about his band opening for GnR.

So I take it China is not printing the albums?:eyes:

Actually, they could have made this a 'made in America' album, and really sold the thing out.

27. They should ban it because it's the "Star Wars: Episode 1" of rock album
Overhyped, sold to the public on basis of nostalgia - but when it comes down to it, it's a bloated, disastrous turd shat out by an out-of-touch egomaniac who's best work is behind him.

And this is coming from someone who loved GNR's old stuff and really tried to give it a chance. I saw the new band two years ago and they did a decent enough job covering the classics.

But it's apparent that Axl is nothing without Izzy Stradlin, who co-wrote all of the songs with him (Slash is replaceable) . That's why the band recorded nothing but covers after he left.

Even with 17 years to work on it, Axl couldn't write enough solid songs to fill a single CD. The album is an overproduced train wreck, that tried to mimic nu metal bands like korn that were never any good to begin with.

Anyhoo, that's my review that no one asked for.

Save your money. Buy the new Cure CD instead
