FDA finds traces of melamine in U.S. infant formula
Source: Mercury News

Traces of the industrial chemical melamine have been detected in samples of top-selling U.S. infant formula, but federal regulators insist the products are safe.

The Food and Drug Administration said last month that it was unable to identify any melamine exposure level as safe for infants, but a top official said it would be a "dangerous overreaction" for parents to stop feeding infant formula to babies who depend on it.

"The levels that we are detecting are extremely low," said Dr. Stephen Sundlof, director of the FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. "They should not be changing the diet. If they've been feeding a particular product, they should continue to feed that product. That's in the best interest of the baby."

Melamine is the chemical found in Chinese infant formula — in far larger concentrations — that has been blamed for killing at least three babies and making at least 50,000 others ill.

Previously undisclosed tests, obtained by the Associated Press under the Freedom of Information Act, show that the FDA has detected melamine in a sample of one popular formula and the presence of cyanuric acid, a chemical relative of melamine, in the formula of a second manufacturer.

1. Isn't it funny how all these revelations are coming to light now.
If asswipe wasn't leaving office we still wouldn't be told that we're feeding poison to our babies.

How fvcking low can they go.

4. Maybe it's time to drop an A-bomb on Beijing and Shanghai..
to get China's attention that we don't want their poisonous junk.

We also need an FDA that will do it's job. Maybe FDA employees with new
babies should be forced to use tainted formula just to make sure they
get the point.

8. I surely enjoy "A-bomb" humour - though I remember it be laughing at those MAKING the reference...
like at free republic and the constant reference to Iraq and Iran being turned into a "sheet of glass".

Sad.

5. Why the vague references to the brands?
A silly question, of course. The loyal bushies will protect their criminal cohorts so long as the cash continues to flow into their pockets.

The link in the OP doesn't work, so I have to presume the story never identifies who these killers are.

6. If that isn't a convincing reason to breast feed, I don't know what is.

9. Breastfeeding isn't always possible
that's why there must always be safe alternatives and supplements.
