Brits most promiscuous as Aussies rank fifth

Britain is shrugging off its prudish image after a study found its citizens to be the most promiscuous of any large western industrial nation, while Australians ranked fifth.

An international index measuring one-night stands, total numbers of partners and attitudes to casual sex also put Britain ahead of second-placed Germany, with the Netherlands third, the Czech Republic fourth and the US sixth.

Researchers behind the study say high scores such as Britain's may be linked to society's increasing willingness to accept sexual promiscuity among women as well as men. David Schmitt, a professor of psychology at Bradley University in the American state of Illinois, oversaw the research.

He told the Sunday Times: "Historically we have repressed women's short-term mating and there are all sorts of double standards out there where men's short-term mating was sort of acceptable but women's wasn't." The study surveyed more than 14,000 people in 48 countries through anonymous questionnaires.

I've never actually been on a one-night stand. I've had plenty of two-night stands where you spend the night, wake late, talk for a while, get busy, have supper, end up staying a second night.

As a Google will show, Germany is loaded with "FKK clubs." FreiKorpsKultur, "free body culture," a term which used to mean nice boring nudists.

Strictly out of historical interest, I once visited a joint just off the Kurfurstendamm in Berlin. It is (in)famous because it opened in 1943, allegedly as a private brothel for top Nazis.

While the B-17s were practicing Radical Urban Renewal on Berlin from 1943-45, most of the Ku-damm was flattened. You can still see the few remaining pre-war buildings that survived, sandwiched in between newer construction.

According to the legend, while the bombers destroyed homes, stores, and churches, not a single bomb ever touched the whorehouse. It has allegedly been operating continuously since the day it opened in 1943.
