Mumbai: Muslim body refuses to bury 9 killers

MUMBAI: The Muslim Council on Sunday decided not to allow burial of the bodies of the nine terrorists killed during the Mumbai siege in the Marine Lines Bada Qabrastan (cemetery).

The council said it was trying to send a message to all cemeteries in India that none of the bodies should be buried on Indian soil.

Bhai Jagtap, a Congress MLA from VP Road-JJ constituency, told TOI some Muslim organisations had approached him demanding that the terrorists should not be buried in any cemetery in India.

A group of Muslim scholars representing about 50 religious organisations met to discuss how the community should respond to the attacks that killed 188 people and injured more than 300.

Only one of the 10 gunmen involved in the shootings and grenade attacks has been captured alive. India says all the attackers came from Pakistan. “These people should be buried where they came from. There is no space for them on our holy land,” said Syed Moinuddin Ashraf, president of the city’s Jamia Qadriya Ashrafiya madrassa or Muslim religious school. “Any country found involved in these attacks should be declared a terrorist state,” he added.

The bodies are currently lying in two morgues in Mumbai hospitals, where officials said they are waiting for the local government’s directions on what to do with them.

“It seems that non-profit bodies have been asked to bury them, but no one seems to be ready,” said one senior official at Mumbai’s Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy (J.J.) Hospital where eight bodies are being kept. The authorities may also wait for a few more days in case someone makes a claim on the bodies, the official said.

The clerics said they hoped their recommendation to refuse burial in India would be heeded. “If someone goes ahead and does it, it would be a big disappointment, a big letdown,” Ashraf said. - AFP

but what I am hoping for is some public and clerical outrage from muslims world wide. This is part of the image problem of Islam. I would love to see an acceptance of modernity and the formation of a liberal/progressive wing of Islam like we see in Christianity and Judaism, but I just do not see it.

given that most of those extravagant after-death fantasies harbored by so many religionists hinge on proper burial. Cavalier disposal of remains might make paople motivated by religion and it's trappings think twice about committing such an act.

But, if they have pigs blood or remains on them, they don't go to heaven.

By doing this you now remove a major incentive because they now won't go to heaven and won't get their 72 virgins.

And humans being what they are, need their symbolism. Asking for compassion in the face of horror is something Christ would do - and look how he was treated!
