LONDON (AP) - The British Broadcasting Corp. is reporting that six gunmen have been shot and killed by Indian security forces at New Delhi's main international airport.

The report on the BBC Web site Thursday was attributed to airport officials.

Airports in India went on high alert Thursday following fresh warnings of attacks as officials said India suspects two senior leaders of a banned Pakistani militant group orchestrated last week's deadly siege in Mumbai.

"As we just flagged in our breaking news section, there were initial BBC reports moments ago of up to six gunmen shot by Indian security forces at the airport in New Delhi. But the BBC now seems to be dialing that report back, now only saying there were shots fired, with no details about who they were shot at or whether anyone was injured. Meanwhile, there seemed to be no word on this in the English-language Indian press -- other than a few reports sourced back to the BBC. And they're now putting 'shootings' in quotes. We'll keep following this closely. But great caution seems warranted about those initial reports.

Late Update: Now it's been dialed back to a report of "sharp sounds" that the airport officials are now investigating. So, well ...

Friday, a Reuters witness said, despite media reports
of a shootout there.

The Indian NDTV channel reported that two sharp sounds

was found after police swept through the terminal, and
normal operations had resumed, it said.

Security scare at Delhi's airport

The Indian authorities have strongly denied reports of a shooting incident at Delhi's main international airport.

Passengers are said to have panicked and mistakenly reported shots being fired after two loud noises were heard in the international flights section.

Tensions have been high in India since last week when gunmen went on a shooting spree in Mumbai, killing nearly 200 people.

Security has been strengthened at Indian airports.

I wouldn't put too much stock into thinking that they have "how it should be" security.
Per their local news, the Indian Coast Guard actually stopped and **boarded** the boat that was carrying the terrorists who flashed some ID cards to the CG and then were let go. Problem: It was the incorrect kind of ID that was needed to man/run that particular boat so it should have been a serious red flag to the CG and should have prompted a full search of the boat and further questioning of the people on the boat. Instead, they were cut loose, and they made a bee-line to Mumbai. They had some Indian Navy official on their news the other night and he admitted they f'd up.
