Sept. 11 defendants ask to plead guilty at Guantanamo
Mon Dec 8, 2008 9:42am EST

GUANTANAMO BAY U.S. NAVAL BASE, Cuba (Reuters) -
The self-styled mastermind of the September 11 attacks
and four co-defendants sent a note to a military judge
at Guantanamo on Monday saying they wanted to confess
and plead guilty.

The judge said he would question the five to ensure
that was their wish.

1. What kind of legal representation did these men have?
Can we trust their confessions? I haven't followed the story of the evidence against them other than that some of it was obtained without torture and some with. Jane Mayer's book goes into this to some extent. If the evidence obtained without torture is very persuasive on their guilt, I think their wishes should be respected. (Although I oppose the death penalty, I think they should be permitted this choice.) If the confessions or evidence was obtained through torture, then I have big questions about this. I do not have enough information to judge. Could someone who has followed this weigh in? Please.

2. The acquiescence has me wondering too. Is this just another scrub?
Lets get everything wrapped up before the new guy takes over. Move along nothing to see here.

4. I think some, possibly all, of them are genuinely, absolutely guilty. I just don't know the facts,
and these confessions deprive the public of ever learning the facts from a clear source.

6. The fact of the matter is if the hearings were televised. OJ style
everyone would know a lot more about these "chaps" then they could stomach with the
rantings of mad men translated into english subtitles.

It would be nice if Barack could send them all to Hollywood for a proper trial

5. Hmmm. Just before "beloved leader" is dethroned to a new administration.
After seven years, this is really suspicious.

7. I'd like to hear from their lawyers to see if they actually did this. If not
bush might be trying to get rid of some evidence of his crimes. (Torture)
