Obama and the girls shop for a Christmas tree
1 hour ago
CHICAGO (AP) — President-elect Barack Obama has made yet another pick, but this time it's not for his Cabinet.

He and his two daughters went to a Christmas tree lot Sunday on Chicago's South Side.

The trio and a friend of the girls hunted for the perfect tree as people gathered across the street to watch. After making their pick, all four headed back to an awaiting sport-utility vehicle.

Obama turned to the crowd and said, "Merry Christmas, everybody!" Then he waved and disappeared inside the vehicle.

5. A "silk" Christmas tree made in China? Nah. Just can't do it.
I always buy a Charlie Brown Christmas tree that nobody else wants, then make it beautiful. It's my tradition, left over from my poor college student, "free lance" artist, and ski bum days.

8. I've bought live-ball root trees and then replanted them in February.
I have two former Christmas trees living in my front yard - white pines.

13. I always thought that would be a great idea
The ground in Wisconsin is rock hard til mid March though. What do you do with them after Christmas, until you plant them? Can they be left outside in root ball form?

17. I put them in the garage. It is cooler, but not freezing and allows the roots to acclimate.

I forget how long and how much you need to water, but if you google, you can probably find some instructions. I think if you have a garge to put it into in January, it wil last 'til mid-March.

Here's some links:

30. If I could keep it in the garage that would work fine.
I'll have to do some googling on this next fall!

21. You can dig the hole
before the ground freezes. Set the soil and mulch by the hole, and then when you put the tree back outside, set it in its hole and mulch it in. Living Christmas trees can only be kept inside for 4-6 days (depending on how dry your house gets). It's a good idea to gradually let the tree adapt to temperature changes by first setting it in an unheated porch/garage before bringing it inside the house, and again when you're done with it and before planting in your pre-dug hole.

14. My husband and I do the same thing...
for some strange reason, we feel "bad" for the trees nobody wants. We're really, really weird like that.
We do the same things with pumpkins.

Then we bring them to the compost heap in our town...

22. It only takes 3-6 years to grow a tree to Christmas tree size. They
are as much a crop as corn or wheat is.

The Hudson Valley Company used to make some nice artificial ones. Are they still in business?

10. I have gone to family tree farms for years and there is nothing wrong with it

These families replant the trees. They take care of their farms.

It is much better then buying some plastic melamine infested thing from China.

I kinda do the same thing, except I go out with a big roll of Detocord and several hundred pounds of Semtex, some pencil detonators, of course one of those big tree cutting machines and blast, cut, rape and pillage my way through the forest until I find just the tree I like.

I also make sure I am trespassing on someone else's property when I do it or state or federal land.

It's the American Way.

16. Who cares?
Really, who cares? A guy takes his daughters to buy a Christmas tree? How is that newsworthy?

So what if its the President-elect. He's a self-identified Christian who most likely does this EVERY YEAR. That's how you define something as mundane.

Are we going to have to deal with the news media covering the first time he uses the toilet in the White House?

Hopefully there will be many more family pics to come and I'll be looking forward to them. I'm sure I won't be the only one.

31. I do too.....
In the past eight years I haven't had the stomach to watch any of the criminal Bush family pics or him hardly at all because my blood pressure can't stomach looking at him (well, except I can't stop watching the shoe-throwing incident - that's soooo fun). These pictures of Obama and kids look like just regular people, not the phony Bush family who try to pretend they aren't wealthy elitists.

33. Obama and Christmas? Say it ain't so. The DU scrooges will be so disappointed.
I'm sure the Obamas will have a big, obnoxious sign right next to the tree attacking it to make them happy.
