Bush on economy moves: I didn't want to be Herbert Hoover
Edited on Fri Dec-19-08 12:51 AM by OmelasExpat
Source: McClatchy

... About his only major regrets included an inability to set a gentler tone in Washington and to win easier confirmation of judicial nominees. "I have been disappointed at times about the politics of personal destruction," said the president who vowed eight years ago to be a uniter. "I came with the idea of changing the tone in Washington and frankly didn't do a very good job of it."

One reason: "War brings out a lot of heated rhetoric and a lot of emotion. I fully understand that. I know that's the case. But surely we can do a better job in Washington of treating each other with respect."

Bush said, however, that he's not guilty, explaining: "I don't want to be a self-serving fellow, but I have never used my position as president to personally denigrate somebody." ...

He made no predictions about when or if he'll be vindicated, but appeared convinced that he's been right, even though voters repudiated his party in last month's elections. "We'll come back," he said of Republicans as he chuckled. "And I'll be out there, the old sage, sitting around, you know (saying), 'If you only did it this way.'"

"There's an old saying in Texas: Fool me once, shame on ... you." "Watch this drive." "Bring 'em on."

We aren't fooled, Shrub. You will always be worse than Hoover.

29. He knows far better than we do what the Family has done.
They have different values than the common man. They feel chosen and obligated to rule the world. Collateral damage means nothing, only that they must stoically assume the burden of their leadership. They feel it is their divine duty to impose their value system on the planet, by hook and by crook and especially by spook, always backed by the most powerful military force on earth, and funded by our labor.

3. hoover was twice the man bush could ever hope to be
compared to bush what hoover did during the "great war" evens out his failure to understand what was happening during his presidency. bush knew what he was going to do the moment he was selected...enrich the upper class by waging a never ending war on the middle class.

11. Also
. . . the man risked his life feeding the Belgians and others caught in the wake of World War I.

Ten years later he did a creditable job dealing with the aftermath of the tragic flood of 1927.

21. Hoover was an engineer, actually.
I keep recommending the book by John Barry
Rising Tide: The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 and How It Changed America
( now in paperback, used copies cheap)
because it was such a good read, I learned about the nicer side of Hoover in it.
Also explains why Katrina could have impacted NO much less.

but, back to my main point: Hoover had a brain. Used it. Did some good things.
Not really the villain of The Depression as much as generally thought.

I don't recall Hoover starting wars that kill hundreds of thousands of innocent people to go along with his great depression.

13. Bush is a total psychopath.... and American Media followed him into ruins
Great Depression and Herbert Hoover, 1929-33

In 1929, 60% of all families had annual incomes of $2,000 or less; 42% had annual incomes of less than $1,500. More efficient machines had made it possible for the productivity of industrial workers to increase by 32% during the 1920s, but their wages had increased only 10%. Profits from the industrial corporations grew 62% and went largely to the wealthiest 5%.

As people lost their homes and created shanty towns, they derisively called the "Hoovervilles." Hoover argued that private charities and state and local governments should be the institutions to provide relief. But they were suffering as well and could not deal with a problem of this magnitude.

Hoover and the Republicans saw aid to corporations as being different. Whereas they believed that helping the individual citizen weather the Depression would corrupt him or her, aiding corporations and other business was different. To many, it appeared that the Republicans were only interested in the rich. The newly-created Reconstruction Finance Corporation aided only the large corporations.

15. Bushler makes Hoover look like FDR. Hell, he makes Nixon look like a model of wisdom and probity.
Come to think of it, the only ones who mae Bushler look good, are comparing him to the most evil leaders in all of history.

Say Bushler's name in comparison to any even mediocre or slightly corrupt leader, and Bushler makes them look good.

Only comparisons with Hitler and Stalin and that ilk make Bushler look wise and kind.

Comparisons with mid-level evil tyrants, such as Marcos and Pinochet, is a tie.

17. At least Hoover didn't start any wars, and did handle a disaster similar to Katrina very competently
Otherwise they are probably quite similar. But, for the reasons above, it's actually insulting to Hoover to compare them.

20. "the old sage"? Yeah, what's he going to tell them? How to STEAL it?
Someone once told me that they knew someone who died then came back to life. The person who died had told them that just before death they had experienced every emotion and feeling that they had CAUSED throughout their life. Man, I hope the same happens to this POS!
