WASHINGTON -- Just back from a visit with American troops in Iraq, Gov. Kathleen Blanco declined Friday to fully embrace President Bush's defense of the Iraqi war, or to side with Democratic critics who accuse the White House of mishandling postwar operations and misrepresenting the need for the conflict.
After a meeting with Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney, Blanco said second guessing is inevitable in a presidential campaign year. She is one of six governors who made the trip to Iraq. The group met with the president and a few of his key advisers on Friday for about 45 minutes.
Blanco said it's not surprising that Bush is "trying to show his decision to go to war was the right decision," while his Democratic challengers are blasting apparently erroneous reports before the war that the country possessed many weapons of mass destruction.
