Hunger mounts in the US

By Tom Eley

(WSWS) -- As the economic crisis deepens, its human toll is becoming more evident. A new survey of food charities in the United States has revealed a dramatic increase in hunger. Feeding America, the largest hunger-relief organization in the US, says that a growing number of families face difficulties in securing adequate nutrition. Meanwhile food banks have proven ill-equipped to meet the increased demand caused by layoffs and increased food costs, and many have collapsed or have restricted the allotments of food they make. In a nationwide survey of 160 local food assistance programs, with operations covering virtually every county in the US, Feeding America found that there has been a 30 percent increase in requests for emergency food assistance, and that every food bank has seen an increase in demand for food relief. An opinion poll commissioned by the organization and released simultaneously found that a growing number of low-income families lack sufficient nutrition.

In a chilling statement on social conditions in the US, 72 percent of surveyed food charities said that they are unable to meet the current demands of local communities for assistance. In most cases, the charities have responded by offering smaller distributions to the hungry, and some have been forced to close down.

This is taking place in every region of the country. To cite a few examples, the Food Bank of New York City reported that organizations under its direction "have regularly reported over the past year that their shelves are bare and that they have had to turn people away due to their lack of food." The Cleveland Foodbank reported that the crisis "is moving at a pace so fast that our staff cannot catch a breath." The Food Bank of Corpus Christi, Texas, said that "our agencies are seeing such a drastic increase in new clients that they are having a hard time getting the money to acquire the food we need," while "other agencies are burning out and we are seeing a number of agencies closing their doors." Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee reported that its agencies have asked that it not refer new clients "because they are running out of food."

In its survey of households, Feeding America found that nearly two thirds of low-income households—defined as having an income at less than 200 percent of the official poverty level—said that within the past year "their food didn't last and they could not afford to buy more." Forty percent "ate less than they felt they should," and 36 percent "cut the size of meals or skipped meals because there wasn't enough money for food." A large majority of low-income respondents, 70 percent, said that they are reducing food spending, while 62 percent said they make multiple shopping trips for food "because they didn't have enough money to buy everything at one time." In New York City, in 2008, nearly 40 percent of all households said that they had faced difficulties in procuring sufficient food for their families, a sharp increase over figures from 2007.

3. I contributed to a food drive
that one of the local news stations held a few days ago, and the response in the DC metro area was overwhelming to say the least. That's why I'm glad you posted this to bring this crisis to all of DU. The best present anyone can give does not come from a store, but from the heart. Let's remember that there are thousands of families suffering this season, and we need to reach out to them and make a difference in our communities.

As for 8 years of Dubya and Darth Vader, fuck them and the horses they rode in on!!!! They brought nothing but misery and distress to America for way too long!! I'll be so, so, so glad when Obama takes the oath of office so we can heal from this madness!

4. People can't buy cars..no matter how great the cars may be..
People can't get a mortgage, they can't pay their credit cards. The economy is not a "little sluggish".

We are in a frigging Depression. You moronic, imbecile, dimwitted, media assholes.

5. Social safety net in SE Michigan is struggling with unprecedented numbers of desperate folks
Edited on Sat Dec-20-08 10:28 PM by Bozita
The snippets below are taken from a commentary written by a young Detroit News columnist.

-snip-

Our equivalent of New Orleans' levees is our tattered safety net, which local leaders wonder how long it will hold.

Tent cities are sprouting up like winter grass in public parks here. Suburbanites in Oakland County flock to shelters overwhelmed by the influx of new refugees.

Doctors say they're seeing suicide and depression skyrocket.Local food banks are going dry for the first time in history. Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan reports a 70 percent increase in need this fall compared to fall 2007.

"The suburbs are really where you're seeing the need grow, as jobs disappear," says Gerry Brisson, Gleaners' senior vice president.

In Plymouth recently, Trinity Evangelical Presbyterian Church heard of growing hunger in its community and recently hosted an event with Gleaners.

They prepared for 250 families to come for food donations, and 700 families showed up. "And that's in Plymouth! Plymouth!" Brisson said of the upscale suburb. "That is far removed from the really poor folks in the city and older suburbs."

Days later, a Warren church invited Gleaners to come and distribute food to 150 families -- and 1,700 families showed up.

6. I shall take this opportunity to pat myself on my back
I was shopping for just a few groceries today, and on one aisle two women were loading their cart with every bag of a certain type of rice that was on the shelf. I said it looked like they had a big meal to prepare and they said they were buying it for a community food bank that for some reason ran out of or just didn't have enough rice. When I ran into them again in checkout I said "let me pay for that". They protested briefly, but I was insistent. They were just thrilled, and I had the pleasure of imagining them as they showed up at the food bank as they shouted that they had all this "free rice!". I was in the right place at the right time, and I'm glad I thought fast enough to take advantage of the opportunity.

Good on me. :)

12. No gifts for the adults this year...
Just for the kids. We sent the funds for their gifts to the food bank. I do not expect to see any 40 year-olds crying - just sighing with relief, as we show them how to AVOID doing all of that frustrating shopping, to buy meaningless things, for fully grown adults that they see only once or twice a year. And it FEELS SO MUCH BETTER!!! Whoopeee!!!

13. one thing that has saved our lives . . .
Has been Angel Food Ministries. Today was pick up day and for about $100.00 my husband brought home enough food to fill our freezer and cupboard for about a month. With no jobs, we can't even afford to shop at that "cough" low price leader, Wal-Mart. Angel Food is great because it at least gives us some dignity of being able to pay something for our food and it is all high quality not like some of the crap you get in food pantries. Sorry but we have done the food pantry route and ended up with rice with bugs in it and food that you wouldn't feed your dog, much less a human. Angel Food is in limited locations but they are expanding all the time. Their web site is www.angelfoodministries.com
They have a place where you can put in your zip code and find the nearest Angel Food location.
