Lawmaker (Barney Frank) says 'no' to Rev. Warren at inauguration
Edited on Sun Dec-21-08 03:41 PM by Newsjock
Source: Associated Press

The first openly gay member of Congress said Sunday it was a mistake for President-elect Barack Obama to invite the Rev. Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at his inauguration.

"Mr. Warren compared same-sex couples to incest. I found that deeply offensive and unfair," Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., said in a broadcast interview.

"If he was inviting the Rev. Warren to participate in a forum and to make a speech, that would be a good thing," Frank said. "But being singled out to give the prayer at the inauguration is a high honor. It has traditionally given as a mark of great respect. And, yes, I think it was wrong to single him out for this mark of respect."

... Frank appeared on "Late Edition" on CNN.

This straight guy is deeply offended by Warren's comments. You want to see hate? Go here any day: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/2152268/posts

There are many people who would have gays killed, if they could. As reflected in that post. Rick Warren has no place at Obama's inauguration.

99. As an ex-used car salesman I take great offense at being
equated with this slime ball! He doesn't even have enough guts to step out of the closet!

As usual the RW wants the whole "marriage issue" kept alive as a wedge issue. There is an easy solution to the problem. A law changing the license to wed to a license to form a civil union and let "marriage" up to the Church it puts everyone on equal footing under the law and lets marriage up to "god's law" where it belongs.

If this is the only mistake President Obama makes we are in great shape, but as he promised during the campaign he is an imperfect man and bound to make others. I have no idea if President Obama made this decision or it was delegated to a subordinate and he is standing behind his "people" but it was senseless pandering and beneath the man I voted for.

117. Can't agree with you there
I am married and not civil unionized. the "Church" does not own the word marriage, nor should they. Marriage existed long before the 'Church'. No one is requiring the "Church" to marry everyone that asks them for a marriage ceremony. They are free to pick and choose who they will marry. They are not however free to choose IF people marry. These religeous clowns need to get over themselves.

103. I especially noticed this remark by a freeper:
"I don’t have a problem with civil unions but I have a serious problem with gay marriage. It will serve no purpose but to boost egos and then destroy countless innocent lives."

Two men marrying will destroy countless innocent lives... :wtf:

Oh, and he wholeheartedly supports president Bush and the Iraq. :puke:

Also, have you seen this signature:

BLITZER: Congressman Frank, are you OK with President-elect Barack Obama's decision?

FRANK: No. And that last comment about loving everybody -- that's wonderful, but the question is, how do you show that?

Mr. Warren compared same-sex couples to incest. I found that deeply offensive and unfair. And the president-elect was wrong when he said, well, he invited me to speak; I'm just inviting him to speak.

If he was inviting the Reverend Warren to participate in a forum and to make a speech, that would be a good thing. We should have these. But being singled out to give the prayer at the inauguration is a high honor.

It has traditionally given as a mark of great respect. And, yes, I think it was wrong to single him out for this mark of respect.

And, yes, everybody should speak, and there could be a dialogue. But giving that kind of mark of approval and honor to someone who has frankly spoken in ways that I and many others have found personally very offensive, I thought that was a mistake for the president-elect to do.

27. you may take a place beside me in the line
where the line has been drawn. I stand in solidarity for all human's rights. I am not GLBT. And i will not stand down. All are created equal and endowed with inalienable rights of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.

(the stumbling point is that this truth should be 'self-evident', for if one human is denied, then thus the self is too denied... so sad that it needs explanation)

so, take a stand here beside me, the whole world surrounds us in every direction.

14. K&R, Barney Frank gets it !

What if some religious leader took the position that, according to his religion, marriage is only valid between members of the same race? Wouldn't it be highly offensive to give this person a position of honor, even if temporary? Not too long ago this had been written into law as well and there were indeed religious arguments used to support it. Of course, we would want to have a dialog and openly debate this person.

it would be a little different if he weren't a constitutional scholar. The California state supreme court (and others) went to great lengths to argue why "separate but equal" is unacceptable, yet Obama seems to disagree based purely upon his own religious convictions. Maybe this is his way of proving to the Christian Right that he is not a Muslim? On edit: oh wait, fundamentalist Muslims would agree with the Christian Right on this issue.

15. My bottom line is this: Obama is not speaking with honesty
He keeps talking about a dialouge. But he only offers the platform to these bigots, never the targets of the bigots. At the McClurkin thing, Donny had the last and only word. That is not a dialouge, no matter how you parse it. It is false for Obama to pretend that giving places of honor to powerful divisive figures is a dialouge. I assume Obama knows what a dilouge is. When do we see him attempt to make such a thing? And since he does not create any form of dialouge, is it not cheap and false of him to keep saying so? Time for a new excuse. Or maybe, time for some damn dialouge! Obama? Some dialouge? You keep talking about it. When do I see it? And if I don't see it, would you please stop talking about it? It is insulting.
The essence of it is this: Shut up and listen to the man's dialouge.

19. k&r. barney is exactly right. barack needs to OPEN HIS MIND
about this this issue/topic--he needs to come to the realization that SEPARATE IS NOT EQUAL, PERIOD. he needs to come to the realization that it is better to DO THE RIGHT THING then try to appeal to the opposite party's base just for sucking up purposes. he needs to understand that showing this type of honor to some asswipe like rick warren only serves to lower thousands of people's opinions of barack and causes us to question his better judgment.

he needs to get over his stereotyped straight male attitude on gay marriage and be fair and right on this point.

if he really thinks sucking the dick of rick warren is a good thing i cannot tell you how much i question his "good" judgment at this point.

I used to be one. Many are nice people, but most are living in a parellel universe essentially the same as the one Bush lives in. Their enemies are: science, logic, common sense, equal rights, and education - except for reading, writing, and counting money.

and millions and millions of people with this great honor being bestowed to a bigot and a pervert (If you saw what he said to Anne Curry in person, you understand).

There's plenty of other great men or women he could have chosen for this honor.

I hope he makes up for his mistake in some way as I want to believe he's not just a good man, but a great man.

If the invitation proves to be too controversial, is there a face-saving way it could be withdrawn?
(Like Warren suddenly remembers a previous engagement), or is Obama stuck with it?

110. Only if Warren himself withdraws, which he will not.
Otherwise, Obama is stuck with him. Imagine the reactions if Obama were to withdraw the invitation because of the protests from the LGBT's community... He would practically have a holy war on his hands. He could forget about getting anything done in which he needs the help of the 'other side'. But it's Obama's problem. He has created it. He should never have invited the hatemongerer in the first place.

66. you just spoke what I wrote to my Mom earlier about this... it does not stack up. it's obviously
one or the other - he either rejects such hate speech from Warren by stopping him from being given the Invocation honor - or - he supports the many documented beliefs of Warren since he gave him such a very honorary assignment that any minister would be shocked with honor over, which would give them a larger platform then they had before the offer was given.

I am concerned Obama feels the latter - if he doesn't, he needs to deeply detail how and why he doesn't - just saying he is a 'fierce advocate' and 'disagrees on some issues' with Warren is not enough - he needs to rebuke the comments of Warren's saying that GLBT people getting married as akin to marrying a little kid, marrying your sibling, or having many wives, and that his "many Gay friends" ask why they can't have "multiple sex partners, it's natural". I've not heard one Gay friend say such a thing, although we all know or have met such people in life - they're very loose and that's their choice, but they're a minority - I wonder where he's meeting these "friends".....

Still, hoping for the best with Obama - I believe he still can change the storyline - and pray he will!

Edited on Sun Dec-21-08 08:50 PM by phillysuse
is highly offensive to Jewish people regardless of their sexual orientation.
He has compared abortions to the Holocaust.
Let's see - 100 cells that have the potential to develop into 1 human being are equivalent to snuffing out the life of a living human being because of their religion.

I don't think so.
This heterosexual Jewish woman is deeply offended that Rick Warren will be giving the invocation and considering whether she goes to the Inauguration or not.

He could have picked Michelle Obama's cousin, Rabbi Funye instead. It would have been inclusive and family at the same time.

ok rev warren is yet another right-wing jesus lover, bummer..more of them back in washington. surprise surprise...look, obama is against gay marriage. we all knew that going in. That is the fact. He is morally wrong on this issue. I hate the idea of a preacher saying a prayer to begin with. but, hey, jesus is an american, right....gotta have god and jesus in US politics or the sky will fall. Wait, the sky is falling: the economic sky and its crashing on all of our heads. so, lets start worrying about that. Look, WARREN IS A PIG. . Poor jesus, what would he say. what would jesus do....he would worry about the suffering people in the world and start doing something about it. if we don't like warren then we should all show up on inauguration day and throw shoes. get it out of our system and then let obama be president and start trying to fix things. what did you all expect, that he would drive around the country in a day-glow bus passing out flowers to everyone and singing songs about why we can't just all get along. This is washington. obama is corporate-democrat. where do you think all that money came from. What happened in California was wrong. people are suffering. ok..now what...people are protesting and trying to change the situation through legal means. keep fighting. keep educating the public. let's let obama become president, and then we can start blathering about why he isn't the savior of the world. he never was. he can't be. but he isn't BUSH. and he is not McCain. and that is why we voted for him.

75. Barack has yet to make a radical move
and it remains to be seen if he will live up to our hopes. He
will benefit from the low expectations left in the wake of his
predecessor for quite awhile, but that won't last 4 years.

Re: Rev. Warren, it's an indication of Obama's relatively
mainstream position on religion and gays.

LGBTs should beware of buying into the lie that society can
give validity (or withhold it) from a relationship. If they
are mainstreamed as they seem to want so badly, they will find
that society's blessings come with some strings they won't
like. Obama differentiates between marriage and civil unions
and thinks gays should have the latter.

We have bigger fish to fry. Every time gay marriage is brought
up it is by the right-wing, and is a political ploy to get
their "base" out to vote.

Obama shouldn't be making his mainstream position on marriage such a prominent issue, as he did at Saddleback Church in order to gain favor with Warren's evangelicals. This is a right-wing issue and he is playing right into it. He may end up sacrificing this in exchange for support on something else.

132. He's made plenty of radical moves
It's pretty damned radical to say you're for change, then select some of the worst of your party's status quo for your cabinet.

It's pretty damned radical to get elected, then start to backpedal on your promises, chief among them the promise to genuinely end the war.

It's pretty damned radical to piss all over virtually every one of your core supporters, starting with the FISA vote. And to shut people out, while inviting their enemies in, and expplain it away as "dialogue". Dialogue requires at least two parties, does it not?

It's pretty damned radical when a Constitutional scholar acts as if he's never heard of civil rights before.

What concerns me is that I've read a variant of this story before, with him, in an article about his tenure as the first African American elected to head the Harvard Law Review. Apparently his fellow African American students complained to a reporter that he was happy to use their support to get elected, but then forgot all about them. I also have contacts with some of his advisory team (vagueness is intentional), and during the campaign I heard about him turning his back on them, using them chiefly as window dressing while doing the exact opposite of a unanimous recommendation. I hope I am wrong, but I am getting a very bad feeling that Obama's primary agenda is Obama, and everyone else in his world exists solely as his useful objects, in his mind's eye at least.

He's been plenty radical. Just not in a good way.

However, this, despite its appearance is just one more "bright, shiny thing." The real area that needs to be concentrated on is legislation. Remember that people like Warren are actually dinosaurs, slowly (far too slowly) dying off and making their last titanic struggle.
