Pope likens "saving" gays to saving the rainforest

Mon Dec 22, 2008 1:46pm GMT

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict said on Monday that saving humanity from homosexual or transsexual behavior was just as important as saving the rainforest from destruction.

"(The Church) should also protect man from the destruction of himself. A sort of ecology of man is needed," the pontiff said in a holiday address to the Curia, the Vatican's central administration.

"The tropical forests do deserve our protection. But man, as a creature, does not deserve any less."

The Catholic Church teaches that while homosexuality is not sinful, homosexual acts are. It opposes gay marriage and, in October, a leading Vatican official called homosexuality "a deviation, an irregularity, a wound."

The pope said humanity needed to "listen to the language of creation" to understand the intended roles of man and woman. He compared behavior beyond traditional heterosexual relations as "a destruction of God's work."

He also defended the Church's right to "speak of human nature as man and woman, and ask that this order of creation be respected."

This is an incredibly misogynist statement, sort of "barefoot and pregnant" analogy.

It doesn't sound like Darwinism to me, but given the sad state of science education in our country, people have a lot of different ideas of what Darwinism means.

93. I think the "forced asexuality" of the clergy is pretty weird
"Unnatural" to say the least. There are a few people who don't have the desire to have sex. I cannot relate to that.

I am aware that a lot of the clergy and the "nuns" are actually homosexuals who have found the best accomodation in life that they can explain to their families. Peace to them. (I hardly know the length of this subject, though. )

whatever that may be. This Pope likes authorian rule, reproduction

in hands of church/state -- and satin slippers, dresses -- and wealth.

121. Did you see the woman dressed in red that tried to attack the Pope?
You could only catch part of it during the broadcast. She was stopped by the "Men in Black" that provide security for Pontiff. There was the look of terror on the Pope's face as the woman lunged towards him.

32. Quite seriously, I think you are correct. Eugenics was a respectable
science back then. the US was saved only by seeing the horrors of applied eugenics during the holocaust.

How much of Western Civilization's contempt and fear of gays goes back to fears that Roman families weren't producing enough soldiers for Rome's armies? How sad to see that the Roman Empire's final triumph is that it lives on at the heart of its enemy, Christianity?

69. Destruction of the Rainforests IS directly correlated
(to use a "science" word) with over-population, espcially in those countries where procreation has been violently enforced by the doctrines of the Catholic Church and other religions! As a holy roller young catholic boy, when the priest preached about "propagating the faith," I thought they meant to go convert the heathens - the non-believers to the Church. It wasn't until as 17 yr old college student when I started reading about the slums in Brazil that I understood the connection between what propagate really meant - unending procreation and hell-on-earth extreme poverty, violence and utter dispair for more than half the world's population. People who choose to not pro-create and some of whom choose to raise the off-spring of irresponsible procreators are do their small bit to help save the rainforest, and the planet and all that depend on it for salvation!

Has anyone calculated the carbon footprint of the Catholic Church? Time to tax the church and use the money to money to help feed people, for starters!

The Vatican is a business, no more, no less, and a VERY crooked business at that.

There has been only ONE pope to publicly state he was going to reform the criminally corrupt Vatican Bank.

And he died in 78 days from ascending the Papal Throne.

109. I thought he OD'd on his Blood Pressure medication "by mistake" was the official story.
In either case, I have never sat and watched GFIII all the way through because it sucks compared to I and II.

So I never knew about that JPI subplot in GFIII. Oh, that's RICH! Francis Ford Coppola smacks att he Catholic Church by telling their murder story as fiction. What could they do? make a fuss about it and they draw attention to their misdeed.

Of course, if I am to be honest about it, it could also be that I hadn't done enough research on it and I fell into an Internet Trap of Bullshit. The Internet is full of 'em and we have to be constantly questioning and verifying to avoid these Bullshit Traps as best we can So I do thank you for pointing out the similarity.

Because the alternative hypothesis is that I got suckered by some Internet BS tht was riffing off the plot of GFIII.

Now I have to go do some more reading, and try to seperate bullshit from fact.

Thanks again for this post.

77. According to wiki...
Edited on Mon Dec-22-08 05:21 PM by Zhade
""Man will never be free until the last king is strangled with the entrails of the last priest." – sometimes attributed to Diderot, sometimes also to Jean Meslier, although neither seems to be true; what Diderot did write is: “Et ses mains ourdiraient les entrailles du prêtre, / Au défaut d’un cordon pour étrangler les rois.” ("And his hands would plait the priest's entrails, / For want of a rope, to strangle kings." – in the poem Les Éleuthéromanes)"

Happy holidays to you and J! I will always remember how very accepting he was when I came out.

14. It came out very badly but it is consistent
If you follow the letter of Canon Law, sex is only for procreation, same-gender sex is not for procreation, hence a threat to society reproducing according to the article.

Homophobia continues to run rampant at the highest levels over their inability to deal with the pedophilia scandal and at those levels those two are also equal in most minds at that level. It also continues the scapegoating of gays as nobody at that level wants to truly take responsibility (that "Church as a perfect society" crap they are taught in seminary).

Things will change in Rome, but not for a couple of centuries.

101. I knew a Catholic seminary student who was heterosexual.
He had grown up in a big Catholic family, and he wanted to get married and have a big family of his own. And, he also wanted to be a Catholic priest. He was the only seminary student in his class who got no financial aid at all, and he couldn't live in the houses belonging to the orders. I thought it was really ironic that the Church would treat someone who loved the Church so much like he was useless. He had to work and take out student loans to go through school. He probably ended up being a counselor or social worker instead.

37. The Catholic Church teaches that while homosexuality is not sinful, homosexual acts are.
As with most Church doctrine....does this make any sense? I mean, does anybody know what this means?

It's not a sin to have sexual desire for someone of the same sex, as long as you don't act on it? Can you be straight or gay if you don't actually have sex? Does Platonic love care about gender? If you desire a same sex partner, but engage in hetero sex, that's not a lie or betrayal? It's OK to create a whole fake life for yourself involving a spouse and children and other victims of your deception? This is not a sin, but being yourself and expressing your true feelings is a sin.
Is that what Papa Benedict, who knows so very much about homosexuality as well as heterosexuality, is telling the millions of his flock?

What a completely shameless idiot!

is at best a club for self-hating gay men that want to take their frustrations out on everyone else. At worst, the priests that like kids might outnumber the poor, self-hating gay priests. Either way women are the cause of it all and if all of them had just been burned in the inquisition we wouldn't be having these problems and the rain forrest would be just fine too!

That used to be the saying --

Then, suddenly a Polish/CIA Pope --

and all the Italian Popes who wanted to affirm the right to personal conscience

and birth control died early. sudden and unlikely deaths.

Vatican II was overturned by r-w in Church --

Meanwhile, Allen Dulles' nephew is rising in the Vatican --

Remember the '60's -- pre JFK coup -- were about peace and democracy --

The three -- JFK. Pope John XXIII and Kruschev were changing the world.

looks like we have another target....pack up the shoes and lets go. the catholic church is one very large hypocrisy. we need to make fun of him and his dress-wearing eunuchs. the institutional church has nothing to say about anything. they are misogynist, bigoted, unreasonable, dictatorial. their moral authority is laughable. the Church's sex scandal and cover up was probably the worst in the world. their history of repression and antisemitism condemns them. i am saying this of the Institutional Church. some organizations within the church do not follow their teachings on many issues, but still identify themselves as catholic. SAVING HUMANITY FROM THE CATHOLIC CHURCH is what is of great importance.

62. "That boy is not French. He's a Jew"
"That boy is not French. He's a Jew." That's the line spoken by the Gestapo officer in Au Revoir les Enfants, Louis Malle's semi-autobiographical film of Jewish boys that had taken refuge at a Catholic Academy. What it really means is that the Jewish boy is not a citizen like the other boys, he is not even a member of the human race. This is the essence of bigotry, the dehumanizing of people on some basis, whether it be race (the nazis saw Jews as a sub-human race), religion, or sexual orientation (another frequent target of the nazis), or mental and physical incapacity (mental patients were the first to be incinerated by the nazis).

What makes the Pope's words so disturbing is that he is using imagery used by the nazis. "Pruning" the forests or the fields, when applied to anything other than forestry or agronomy, always leads to the human rights abuses, such as we saw in Pol Pot's killing fields. LGBTs are human beings like all other members of the human race. They are entitled to the same rights and privileges as everyone else. No one has the right to dehumanize LGBTs, particularly those in positions of authority and influence.

The foundation of irreligious criticism is: Man makes religion, religion does not make man. Religion is, indeed, the self-consciousness and self-esteem of man who has either not yet won through to himself, or has already lost himself again. But man is no abstract being squatting outside the world. Man is the world of man – state, society. This state and this society produce religion, which is an inverted consciousness of the world, because they are an inverted world. Religion is the general theory of this world, its encyclopaedic compendium, its logic in popular form, its spiritual point d’honneur, its enthusiasm, its moral sanction, its solemn complement, and its universal basis of consolation and justification. It is the fantastic realization of the human essence since the human essence has not acquired any true reality. The struggle against religion is, therefore, indirectly the struggle against that world whose spiritual aroma is religion.

According to the prophecies of St. Malachi this is the final pope before St. Peter returns to prepare everyone for the final days although I suspect it will be more a matter of one of the more lunatic cardinals declaring himself St. Peter and preparing everyone for the final days of the Catholic Church. I view all Christians at this point as in desperate need of psychiatric care. Catholics in particular.

and (heh) natural in our animal/plant/environmental world.

From gay relationships to female only reproduction, the natural order of creation is MUCH more diverse than the human species. The "language of creation", "order of creation" is many degrees more complicated than the Pope is willing to acknowledge.

Humans (mammals) aren't 100% right handed: 10% +/- are lefties. Same with gays. This is the natural order of things. I'm no believer in gawd, but if you believe in a creator, there are obvious biological differences built into our species that cannot be glossed over regardless of the Pope's strained attempt to only "see" biology through his own (distorted and damaged) lens.

It makes me very sad about my family and friends that remain in the Catholic church.
