By MICHAEL FELBERBAUM
Associated Press Writer

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Former Democratic National Committee chairman Terry McAuliffe said on Saturday he intends to run for governor of Virginia.

After months of speculation over his plans, McAuliffe announced his intentions in a video posted on his Web site. In the video, McAuliffe said he will make his intention to run official on Wednesday as part of a week-long campaign kickoff.

The stops include town hall meetings in Hampton Roads, Bristol, Richmond and others, where McAuliffe will unveil plans for job creation, education and renewable energy.

"Over the coming months we will travel to every corner of the commonwealth to ask all Virginians to join our campaign to get the economy moving again," McAuliffe said in the video.

In November, the 51-year-old established his campaign committee, Friends of Terry McAuliffe, with the State Board of Elections, secured the services of strategist Mike Henry and began touring Virginia, but had not made his candidacy certain.

McAuliffe faces two other Democrats who have been active for nearly a year in an already contentious nomination fight to succeed Democratic Gov. Timothy M. Kaine...>

They deserve better. They'll undoubtedly get McAuliffe.

2. damn...i remember the good old days in the commonwealth
when the people who ran for governor were actually virginians...now everyone seems to view the office as a 'holding pattern' while waiting for something better to come along...

6. He wouldn't get my vote in the primary...
I can't help it...the word "carpetbagger" keeps coming to mind!:eyes:

I'm rooting for Moran.

8. depends
on how in touch he is with the state...if he is that type whose comfort zone is only the D.C. suburbs and rubbing elbows with the big wheels in the state capitol, then it will be too easy for an opponent to make the 'carpetbagger' accusation stick...this whole thing just has a weird vibe to it, imo -- these are trying times in virginia and the state needs more than someone who wants to puff up his resume...of course, i could be reading the situation wrong...

12. I agree-he will be a NoVa candidate only
maybe some Hampton Roads but other than that he won't go over very well-that is my prediction

then again he is running for some reason. One has to assume that he has done the market research and gotten SOME positive feedback...at least hopefully (from his point of view) not just in the cocktail circuit.

I prefer Deeds but Moran will do. The haircut the Reps are running Bolling will be hard to beat IF their party doesn't disintegrate from the bloodletting that is going on.
