U.S. seeks ship to move arms to Israel

The U.S. is seeking to hire a merchant ship to deliver hundreds of tonnes of arms to Israel from Greece later this month, tender documents seen by Reuters show.

The U.S. Navy's Military Sealift Command (MSC) said the ship was to carry 325 standard 20-foot containers of what is listed as "ammunition" on two separate journeys from the Greek port of Astakos to the Israeli port of Ashdod in mid-to-late January.

A "hazardous material" designation on the manifest mentions explosive substances and detonators, but no other details were given.

"Shipping 3,000-odd tonnes of ammunition in one go is a lot," one broker said, on condition of anonymity.

5. No, you are mixing up the b61mod11 and a conventional

weapon. The conventional weapon is designed to penetrate many feet through concrete and then explode, destroying structures.

The b61mod11 is a thermonuclear weapon with a dialed down yield designed to penetrate a few feet and then use a sub kilo ton (still a massive explosion) to destroy structures. However this would pull ton of dirt into the explosion creating a massive radioactive event.

Much more so than a traditional air burst of a large nuclear weapon at a few thousand feet.

Regardless, the estimated nuclear stockpile of Israel is around 400, so not all of those would be fitted as such if that is possible.

A Pentagon spokesman said the ammunition was for a U.S. stockpile in Israel. The U.S. military pre-positions stockpiles in some countries in case it needs supplies at short notice.

In the tender documents, the U.S. Navy's Military Sealift Command (MSC) said the ship was to carry 325 standard 20-foot containers of what is listed as "ammunition" on two separate journeys from the Greek port of Astakos to the Israeli port of Ashdod in mid-to-late January.
