CDC director is out, government e-mail says
Source: MSNBC/AP

ATLANTA - The head of the federal government's public health agency is out, according to an e-mail sent Friday night to federal employees.

Dr. Julie Gerberding has resigned as director of the Atlanta-based U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and will be replaced as of Jan. 20 by a deputy who will serve as interim director.

(snip)

Gerberding’s six years leading one of the nation’s most trusted institutions were marked by numerous controversies, from allegations that she allowed politics to interfere with science to concerns that her strategic decisions incapacitated the agency’s ability to respond in a public health crisis, the Atlanta paper reported.

And last year, an investigation concluded the CDC failed “in almost every respect” to protect Hurricane Katrina’s victims from dangerous formaldehyde fumes in government-provided trailers.

5. re: "This women was bad news for the CDC. " She certainly was...
I hope the handful of DUers who have somehow come to think Gerberding was the exception to Bush's* horrendous crony picks will finally come to realize what a horrid disaster she was for this once venerable public health agency. I know there are still dedicated people working there and can only hope they will have the leadership, resources, and freedom to come back to what they once were.

10. "...Gerberding’s six years....

And wy should she be any different from dimson's other appointments?

Gerberding consistently argued that the changes she made allowed the agency to do its job better in a post-9/11 world.

Someone save us from that. If I never hear that phrase again it will be tooo soon

So, if this is the real reason that she is (will be?) let go, why the hell would Gupta be hired?

15. We'll probably be able to find an uber-qualified replacement,
since the biological health sciences are hemorrhaging jobs due to funding issues.

Brilliant people closing down labs, because they just can't get grants any more.

I wish that some science funding could find its way into the economic-stimulation-through-infrastructure-plans. Yea, biology might not build you a bridge, but it might prevent you from having to drive over that bridge on your way to your next Chemo treatment. I'd be willing to be that money spent on science tends to stick around here better than some other forms in which our money is spent.

Too sleepy. Too demoralized.

had to publicly defend the Government on why they were holding back approved funds for sick 9.11 first responders.

I know that community disliked her.

Her hands were as cold as ice & she had P.R. guy's surrounding her.

I am tired of seeing Bush administration people on my television screen. Unless they are being investigated, interrogated, indicted or arrested.
