U.N. rights council hits Israel over Gaza
Source: Reuters

By Robert Evans

GENEVA, Jan 12 (Reuters) - The United Nations Human Rights Council, dominated by Muslim states and their allies, condemned Israel on Monday for "grave violations" of human rights of the people of Gaza.

A resolution drafted by Arab, Asian and African countries also called for the urgent despatch of an international mission to investigate Israeli behaviour in the enclave, and called on Israel to cooperate with it.

But the non-binding resolution, passed by 33 votes with 13 abstentions and one against, was dismissed by Israel as one-sided and reflecting the "fairytale world" of the 47-member Council, for which the Jewish state is a prime target.

The text of the document said the Council "strongly condemns the ongoing Israeli military operations... which have resulted in massive violations of human rights of the Palestinian people and systematic destruction of the Palestinian infrastructure."...

UN human rights body to send fact-finding mission to Gaza

12 January 2009 – The United Nations Human Rights Council today adopted a resolution strongly condemning the ongoing Israeli military operation in Gaza, and decided to dispatch a fact-finding mission to investigate human rights violations committed in the territory.

Canada cast the only negative vote for the non-binding resolution, which received the support of 33 of the Council’s 47 members, while 13 countries abstained.

In adopting the text, the Geneva-based body demanded that Israel – which launched the latest offensive 17 days ago with the stated aim of ending Hamas rocket attacks into Israel – immediately end its attacks and withdraw its military forces from Gaza.

The Council’s action came as it wrapped up a special session begun last Friday to consider “the grave violations of human rights in the occupied Palestinian territory, including the recent aggression in the occupied Gaza Strip.”...

4. If Israel refuses to end its attacks and withdraw its military forces from Gaza
...does that then mean that the UN will not dispatch its fact-finding mission to investigate human rights violations committed in the territory? Well, probably because of the dangers involved to UN personnel. But, if the UN Human Rights Council is serious about this, they ought to send the fact finding group as close to the war zone theater as possible now and publicize their presence on every available media and remain in place until Israel agrees to the terms the UN Human Rights Council has laid down.

5. The "fairytale world"??
..."was dismissed by Israel as one-sided and reflecting the "fairytale world" of the 47-member Council"..

Yes..of course only in a fairytale world would people want to stop the killing and maiming of innocent people. Only in fairytale world would people seek peace. Only in a fairytale world would the destruction of all basic services and infrastructure be considered barbaric and murderous.

You must be from a fairytale world if you think babies should not be burned, little children should not be bombed out of their schools and homes.

You must be from a fairytale world if you have a problem with dropping phosphorus bombs on defensless children, burning holes in their bodies as they scream.

Dont think women should be blown to bits while huddled in their homes, pleading for help? You must be visting from Fairytale world.

I guess we just need to all hail from the same dark, evil, underworld that Cheney, Bush and the whole American/Israeli neo-con community resides to appreciate just how right this all is.
