House Republicans Invite Obama to Address Them
Source: Washington Post

House Republicans have invited President-elect Barack Obama to speak before the entire GOP conference, hoping to set a different tone to the partisan wars of the last two years in which congressional Democrats battled President Bush.

In a letter dated Jan. 9, the Republican leadership team asked Obama to attend one of their regular meetings with the 178-member GOP conference "at your earliest convenience" after he is sworn-in as the 44th president.

"In accordance with your campaign pledge to work in a bipartisan manner and change the partisan tone in Washington, D.C., we would like to extend an invitation to you to address a meeting of the House Republican Conference," wrote Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio), Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) and the four other members of the elected leadership team.

The invitation to Obama comes amid the ongoing talks about an $800 billion stimulus plan for which the president-elect has vowed to win bipartisan support, and as he seeks congressional approval for the release of the second half of monies from the Troubled Asset Relief Program, the $700 billion financial rescue plan approved in early October. On Sunday, Boehner said he opposes the release of the funds unless the incoming Obama administration can demonstrate the need for those funds.

No date has been set for the Obama-Republican meeting. Bush attended about one GOP conference meeting a year, usually during key legislative battles, but almost never attended Democratic meetings....

While on one hand it would please me to no end to see the Senate and House repukes beaten to a political pulp, we're likely to see more accomplished over the next 8 years if Obama can court at least a few of the moderate repubs. Especially when the hard core right wingers of their party start their little obstructionist games, then they'll be exposed for what they really are.

7. It sounds like they want to pick a fight with Obama and start off by telling him
what they will not accept and spew out their threats. Those bastards don't want to work with him and they sure don't want him to get anything done. It will be a waste of time.

6. They really don't have many options, if they don't at least appear
to want to work with Obama, they will lose more seats in 2010.

13. "As the majority, you people have ruined our economy, our environment,
and our international standing. You also let the president conform to his own personal Constitution.

Those days are over. The Constitution is back in effect. When a bill becomes law, it will be because you passed it and I signed it. Anyone in my administration who breaks the law will be fired first, then prosecuted - not given a Medal Of Freedom. The military's function is to defend and protect this country and its people - not to spy on honest citizens and enrich a few war profiteers. You and I work for the American public. Remember that.

Beginning today this country starts back on the road to greatness. You can come along and be part of the renewal, or you can become roadkill. Get to work, and get me a signed stimulus bill by Groundhog Day."
